USA Men’s Water Polo Announces FINA World League Roster

GENOVA, Italy, June 12. THE USA Men's Senior National Team has announced their roster for the upcoming FINA World League Super Final starting next week in Genova, Italy. In addition they have trimmed their training roster to 16 players as they move closer to the Olympic Games. Competition in the World League will begin on Monday, June 16 with a match against Italy.

Team captain and two-time Olympian Tony Azevedo leads off the roster of 15 headed to Italy. He will be joined by veteran and fellow two-time Olympian Ryan Bailey along with 2004 Olympians Adam Wright, Layne Beaubien, Jesse Smith, Jeff Powers, and Brandon Brooks. In addition to those players will be a core group that has a good deal of experience in their own right including Merrill Moses, Rick Merlo, Peter Hudnut, Peter Varellas, Tim Hutten, John Mann, Brian Alexander, and JW Krumpholz.

Cut from the training roster were Thomas Hopkins and Adam Hewko. It was another tough decision for Head Coach Terry Schroeder as the team trims their roster. "It is very difficult to release any of our players at this time. They have all sacrificed so much to fulfill their Olympic dreams. Thomas and Adam both have some great qualities as water polo athletes as well as human beings. They are both great kids and I hope they stick around for another four years. They should both be proud to know that they were a part of the top 18 athletes to play water polo in the entire country," Schroeder said.

Following the World League Super Final the team will head to Hungary for common training. From there they will return home where their Olympic roster will be named on June 30.
