USA Junior Nationals: Meet Record Surplus Seen During Fourth Night of Action

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, August 9. WHILE USA Swimming's version of the junior national championships has only been back in existence for a short time, the meet-record onslaught is still impressive at the Speedo Junior National Championships. Seven more standard went into the record books as the assault continued during the fourth night of competition.

Women's 100 backstroke
Bluefish's Elizabeth Beisel and West Michigan's Emily Bos both clipped Jennifer Connolly's meet-record time of 1:03.47 set a year ago, but Beisel won the head-to-head matchup, 1:03.35 to 1:03.42.

Atlantis Aquatics' Jessica Guro rounded out the top three after a tough race herself with a 1:03.75, narrowly holding off fourth-place finisher Taylor Wohrley of the CSP Tideriders (1:03.80).

Men's 100 backstroke
Dallas Mustang Matt Thompson edged his prelim meet-record time of 56.60 with a first touch of 56.30 in finals. He knocked off Swimming World Magazine's High School Swimmer of the Year Austin Staab of Westerville, who finished second in 56.85.

Thompson's teammate Max Murphy closed out the medalists with a bronze-winning 57.36.

Women's 400 freestyle
Brophy East's Ashley Evans cut more than two seconds off her prelim meet-record time of 4:15.00 with a gold-winning readout of 4:12.77. Mission Viejo's Chloe Sutton pocketed silver in 4:14.80, while Elizabeth Beisel returned from winning the 100 back to claim bronze in 4:15.15.

Men's 400 freestyle
Chad La Tourette's meet-record time of 3:55.17 held up where many others did not as Carolina Aquatics' Mack Montgomery won the race in 3:59.98.

Mecklenburg Aquatics' Thomas Santoli (4:00.87) and Long Island Aquatics' Tommy O'Neill (4:01.01) comprised the rest of the top three.

Women's 100 breaststroke
Kasey Carlson's meet standard of 1:10.77 also remained on the books as Sara Nicponski came up just short with a winning time of 1:10.91.

Sea Devil Swim's Ashley Danner touched second in 1:11.19, while Dallas Mustang Spindrift Beck wound up taking third in 1;11.32.

Men's 100 breaststroke
After losing his previous meet record in prelims, Mission Viejo's John Criste returned fire with a 1:03.21 to re-capture the standard after Dillon Connolly took it with a 1:03.67 in qualifying. Connolly, meanwhile, settled for silver in 1:03.39, while Barracuda Brad Craig claimed bronze in 1:04.04.

Women's 100 butterfly
Hershey Aquatics' Kati Nolan walked away with the women's 100 fly title in 1:01.19, while Gulf Coast Aquatics' Kelsey Winters picked up second-place honors in 1:01.37. Alex Forrester completed the rest of the medal-winners with a time of 1:01.44 for third place.

Men's 100 butterfly
Arlington Alligator Sam Wilcher lowered his meet-record from a preliminary 54.71 to 54.38 en route to eking out a victory over Westerville's Austin Staab, who finished second in 54.40. Kansas City Blazer Bobby Bollier came in third with a readout of 54.52 to round out the medal-winning trio.

Women's 400 freestyle relay
Sun Devil Aquatics' B team of Haley Krakowski (57.43), Traycie Swartz (56.63), Emily Christiansen (59.32) and Samantha Caldwell (58.17) set the meet record with a time of 3:51.55 in the women's 400 free relay. That performance eclipsed the 3:52.30 set by Club Wolverine last year.

Lakeside Swim's foursome of Meredith King, Amanda Faulkner, Leah Reinhardt and Abbie Fish took second in 3:53.45, while Gator Swim's contingent of Jamie Bohunicky, Lily Ramirez, Natalie Smith and Angelina Ballatore placed third in 3:55.11.

Men's 400 freestyle relay
Longhorn's squad of David Zolno (52.88), Josh Nosal (52.54), Anders Storvik (52.98) and Jonathan Jackson (51.28) demolished the club's previous meet record of 3:32.08 with a clocking of 3:29.68 to win the men's 400 freestyle relay, while also leading five relays under the previous record.

Tucson Ford's team of Kurt Denningoff, Adrian Kirkpatrick, Herbie Behm and Ben Aaberg finished second in 3:30.06, while Barracuda's quartet of Gabe Strickler, Tony Wahl, Morgan Priestley and Brad Craig placed third in 3:30.74.

Redlands' team of Joseph Hale, Tyler Harp, Austin Brown and Karl Krug, as well as Mecklenburg Aquatics' squad of Jared White, Thomas Santoli, Ben Correll and Charles Higgins, also surpassed the previous standard with times of 3:31.29 and 3:31.32, respectively.
