USA Diving Selects FINA World Cup Synchro Teams

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, April 12. DAVID Boudia (Noblesvile, Ind./West Lafayette, Ind.) beat himself Sunday, but he still earned the right to represent the United States in the synchronized 10-meter contest at the 2010 FINA World Cup in China in June. That's because he competed with two partners in USA Diving's World Cup synchronized diving trials, and his teams finished first and second.

Boudia and Nick McCrory (Chapel Hill, N.C./Durham, N.C.) earned the World Cup roster spot after winning the men's 10-meter synchro title with a two-list score of 881.01 points, just 3.03 points ahead of Boudia and Thomas Finchum (Indianapolis, Ind.), Boudia's long-time synchro partner.

Kassidy Cook (The Woodlands, Texas) and Cassidy Krug (Piittsburgh, Pa./Stanford, Calif.) also made the World Cup team after winning the women's 3-meter synchro title. The pair scored 642.30 points, finishing ahead of Kelci Bryant (Chatham, Ill./Minneapolis, Minn.) and Abby Johnston (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Durham, N.C.), who were second at 629.10.

Divers were permitted to dive with more than one partner as part of High Performance Director's Steve Foley's plan to emphasize synchronized diving and try out potential pairings, thus increasing competition within the United States.

The 2008 Olympic team of Boudia and Finchum had won seven national titles in synchronized 10-meter since 2005 and medaled at the 2007 and 2009 World Championships, but with the emergence of rising star McCrory, Foley wanted to see how three platform standouts would match up together.

Teams performed two lists of dives at the synchro trials, and the team with the highest cumulative score earned the World Cup spot. Boudia and Finchum had the top score after the first list, with Finchum/McCrory in second place and Boudia/McCrory in third. Boudia and McCrory edged their way to the top after scoring 102.12 points on their front 4 1/2, the most difficult dive performed by any of the teams, in their second list. Finchum/McCrory ended up third.

There were also multiple pairings tested out on the women's side. Bryant and Krug finished third, and Cook and Loren Figueroa (Kingwood, Texas) were fourth.

In addition to determining the synchro teams for the FINA World Cup, USA Diving also selected teams for the upcoming Canada Cup (April 29-May 2 in Montreal) and the AT&T USA Diving Grand Prix (May 6-9 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.). The synchro teams selected to the World Cup team will also compete at the AT&T Grand Prix. As the second-place team, Bryant and Johnston were selected to the AT&T Grand Prix team, and Steele Johnson (Carmel, Ind.) and Toby Stanley (Conway, Ark./Indianapolis, Ind.), who finished fourth in the 10-meter contest, will also go to Fort Lauderdale. Ariel Rittenhouse (Santa Cruz, Calif./Los Angeles) and Tory Ishimatsu (Seal Beach, Calif./Los Angeles), the sixth-place team in women's 3-meter, earned a spot on the Canada Cup.
