US National Team Additions/Updates: Torri Huske, Kate Douglass, Claire Curzan, Gretchen Walsh, Bella Sims, Daniel Roy

Despite a shortened competition year in 2020, multiple fast swims resulted in times improvements and the addition of four top-caliber athletes to the 2020-2021 US National Team. These athletes include Bella Sims (800m freestyle), Claire Curzan (100m butterfly), Kate Douglass (100m butterfly) and Daniel Roy (200m breaststroke), as well as qualifying times updates for Gretchen Walsh (50-meter freestyle time update) and Torri Huske (100m freestyle; 100m butterfly time update; 200m I.M.).

Sims’ 800m freestyle performance of 8:27.01 gave her the first National Team selection of her young career. The 15-year-old’s swim earned her a first-place finish at the Toyota U.S. Open, and gave her the third-fastest swim in the world in 2020.

Curzan’s showing at the Toyota U.S. Open was one of the shining displays at the meet, as she captured top-5 finishes in four events. One of those finishes came in the 100m butterfly, when she went 56.61 to capture first place, a new Toyota U.S. Open meet record and a 15-16 National Age Group record. The swim gave her the first victory at a senior-level national meet in her career, as well as her first US National Team selection.

Douglass’ National Team Selection comes after a 57.43 performance in the 100m butterfly also at the 2020 Toyota U.S. Open. Her time improved on her previous personal best by over a second and gave her the fifth-fastest time in the world in 2020.

For Roy, he earned his second-career U.S. National Team selection following a 2:08.89 performance in the 200m breaststroke at the Stanford Invite in November 2020. The time gives Roy the fifth-fastest swim by an American dating back to 2019.

Though Walsh was already on the National Team in the 50m freestyle, her 24.65 performance at the 2020 Toyota U.S. Open beat her previous personal-best time of 24.71. Her new 24.65 time keeps her as the fourth-fastest American 50m freestyler in the 2020-2021 season and made her the 11^th-fastest 50m freestyle swimmer in U.S. history.

For Huske, she dropped her time in the 100m butterfly after a 57.36 performance also at the 2020 Toyota U.S. Open. That meet proved beneficial for the emerging talent, as she also earned US National Team spots in the 200m I.M. and 100m freestyle following 2:11.18 and 54.04 performances, respectively.
