University of North Carolina Completes Recruiting

CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina, June 4. THE University of North Carolina men's and women's swimming and diving program completed its spring recruiting recently with the addition of 10 swimmers and divers to the Class of 2013. Head coach Rich DeSelm also signed eight prospective student-athletes in the fall signing period last November bringing the entire class to 18 individuals.

Following are brief bios on the 10 spring signees with quotes both from the individuals and head coach DeSelm. The spring class includes five men and five women.

Hunter Cwalinski
Hometown: Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
High School: Cardinal Gibbons High School
Club: Ft. Lauderdale Aquatics
Club Coach: Duffy Dillon
Intended Major: International Studies

Short Course Career Bests: 21.68 in 50-yard freestyle; 45.46 in 100-yard freestyle; 1:42.89 in 200-yard freestyle
Swimming Coach Rich DeSelm says, "Hunter is an outstanding student and swimmer who will provide added depth to our sprint group. He has developed under Coach Duffy Dillon at Ft. Lauderdale Aquatics and we look for him to continue to improve in the coming years at UNC."
Swimmer Hunter Cwalinski says, "I've always wanted to go to UNC. After I took my trip and met the team, I knew it was the best place for me. I think the mix of excellent academics and athletics will help me to become the best I can be."

Swimming Coach Rich DeSelm says, "Stephanie is another great swimmer coming to UNC from Jay Fitzgerald's Pine Crest School program. She has a tremendous freestyle and will help us immediately in middle distance
and sprint events. Stephanie was the Florida State High School champion and will represent Switzerland this summer at the World University Games."
Swimmer Stephanie Eisenring says, "I can't wait to start a new chapter and season at North Carolina, I know I will only move forward at UNC."

Diving Coach Kevin Lawrence says, "Chay is an untapped diamond in the rough that has already had a successful diving career. She will be one of our top divers this fall. She is very well balanced academically and athletically. Most importantly, she is a fine young woman with character and integrity, which has always been a key ingredient for success in our program at Carolina. She will make a strong women's team stronger and I look forward to working with her for the next four years. She is a great fit for the Carolina swimming and diving program."
Diver Chay Malvasio says, "The University of North Carolina has a great tradition of excellence in academics, athletics, and in other college social aspects. The students, professors, and coaches at UNC have the reputation of being kind, caring, motivational, and supportive. I chose UNC in order to be a part of that tradition, and I believe that being at a higher level of academic excellence will push me to excel as well. Furthermore, I am more than ecstatic to be an upcoming freshman on the swimming and diving team. I believe both the teammates and coaches have positive attitudes that will push me to do my best, as I hope to have that same effect on the team. I am looking forward to the impact that UNC will have on my life."

Mike Mohr

Swimming Coach Rich DeSelm says, ""Mike will be the fourth Mohr brother to attend and swim at UNC. We believe he has the talent and drive to improve upon his times from high school. His eagerness to further develop his swimming skills is refreshing and I know his enthusiasm for being a Carolina swimmer will help our team atmosphere. His coach, Dave Westfahl at Shorewood Swim Club, thinks his athleticism and desire will drive him toward significant improvements at UNC."
Swimmer Mike Mohr says, "Being the youngest brother of three former Tar Heel swimmers, it has been my dream for many years to be a part of this team. I am also thrilled at the opportunity to swim under the tutelage of Coach DeSelm."

Michelle Mudge

Diving Coach Kevin Lawrence says, "Michelle is a wonderful and talented young woman who will also be red-shirting her first year. Academically, she is stellar, and diving wise, she already has the tools it takes to become a fantastic diver at UNC. She is coming in with a strong group of freshman and sophomores. She has a heart of gold, and will be immediately look upon as being one of the leaders of our talented freshman class. Her work ethic is tops and will definitely bring a positive strong presence to an already diving team for next year. I'm excited that she wants to become a Tar Heel."
Diver Michelle Mudge says, "I can't wait to come to UNC and be a part of an amazing team and further my diving ability! Carolina is such a prestigious school with so much to offer. I know I will love it!"

Katie Murphy

Swimming Coach Rich DeSelm says, "Katie has tremendous background, coming out of Coach Bruce Gemmell's Delaware Swim Team club. Her strengths are in the IM's, fly and breast and she will be a tremendous asset to our women's team in many ways. Her father, Chris, swam at UNC and her sister, Laura, is one of our tremendous team managers."
Swimmer Katie Murphy says, "I am really looking forward to coming to UNC because the team seems very close and dedicated to swimming, but also are very supportive outside of the pool which is awesome. Also, the coaches care about the swimmers' individually and their development as a person, not just as a swimmer. Basically I can't wait to be part of the Tar Heel team!"

Pat O'Donovan

Swimming Coach Rich DeSelm says, "We are very excited about Patrick's decision to attend UNC. He has had a limited, but successful New York high school swimming career, including being the New York High School State Champion in the 100-yard back. Under Coach Rich Hamburger at Auburn High, Patrick has developed skills that will help him blossom in college. He is tall with long limbs and will develop as a college swimmer with more opportunity to train in our program."
Swimmer Pat O'Donovan says, "I am excited about becoming a Tar-Heel and to be apart of a swim program with both an excellent team and coaching staff."

Jackie Rudolph
Hometown: Virginia Beach, VA

Swimming Coach Rich DeSelm says, "Jackie is from Virginia Beach and has been a Carolina fan all her life, as her parents both attended UNC.
She will join our women's distance group and, we feel, will benefit from training with the group focused on these events. Jackie's background at Tide Swim Team under both previous coach Craig Clift and current coach Nate Boyle will serve her will at UNC."
Swimmer Jackie Rudolph says, "I am extremely excited for Carolina. I have always dreamed of swimming at UNC and am so glad Coach DeSelm has given me this chance."

Bryant Wooten

Intended Major: Psychology, Minor in Biology
Diving Coach Kevin Lawrence says, "I have been fortunate to work with Bryant as he has spent the last two years training with the Tar Heel Diving Club. Bryant has a steep learning curve and has all the components it takes to become a standout diver at UNC. Due to the talent and depth of our men's diving squad, Bryant will red-shirt his first year, which will prepare him to become one of the best res shirt freshman Carolina will have competing for them next fall. As is with our other freshmen coming in, his character and values are what we look for in standout student athletes."
Diver Bryant Wooten says, "I chose UNC because it's a superior University academically and athletically. It provides the perfect place for any person to learn, get involved, and have fun."
