BRIDGEPORT – The University of California-Los Angeles retains the title as the best team in the nation as the Bruins once again top the Women’s National Top 20 rankings and highlight the Week 9/March 18 Women’s Varsity Polls released today by the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA).

The top teams in two of the polls remain the same as the Bruins (National Top 20) and Princeton University (CWPA Top 10) retain the titles as the best teams in the nation and in the CWPA through March 25.

On the Division III level, two changes occur as Whittier College is joined by Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in the preeminent position of the Division III National Top 10. Back on the East Coast in the CWPA Division III Top Five, the reign of Connecticut College at No. 1 comes to an end as Washington & Jefferson College takes over the top spot to dislodge the defending league Division III champion Camels.

Voted on by a panel of coaches from the CWPA, Western Water Polo Association (WWPA), Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), Big West Conference, Golden Coast Conference, Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the polls are compiled and released on Wednesday during the season through the week following the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship.

Harvard University (87 points) is the biggest mover of the week as the Crimson rise two spots to No. 3 to go in front of the University of Michigan (85 points) and Brown University (80 points). The Wolverines and Bears slip to No. 4 and 5, respectively, with the quintet of Hartwick College (78 points), Bucknell University (70 points), Mercyhurst University (65 points), George Washington University (60 points) and Connecticut College (33 points) completing the Top 10.

2015 Women’s CWPA Division III Top 5 (Week 9)

For the first time since April 2, 2014, a team other than Connecticut College, which claimed the 2013 and 2014 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Championships, assumes the mantle of the sole No. 1 team in the CWPA Division III Top Five Poll as 2014 CWPA Division III Championship runner-up Washington & Jefferson College takes over the top spot in the Week 9/March 18 rankings.

The Presidents and Camels, who both garnered 97 points last week, are separated by a single point as Washington & Jefferson (98 points) squeaks in front of Connecticut (97 points) to take over as the group’s Division III best team entering this weekend’s CWPA Division III competition at Monmouth College in Monmouth, Ill.

The question as to which program is the predominant force in the league could be temporarily decided at 11:40 a.m. on Saturday, March 21, as the Presidents and Camels are slated to meet for the first time since a 7-3 W&J title game win on April 13, 2014 at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn., during the CWPA Division III Championship.

For fans, the difference between the CWPA Top 10, in which Connecticut sits in front of W&J, and CWPA Division III Top Five is due to different pollsters voting on the two sets of selections. In both sets of rankings, a change of one position for either the Camels or the Presidents in the Top 10 or Top Five would shift the balance between the two programs.

Changes keep coming in the Division III rankings as Macalester (89 points) slides in front of Carthage College (86 points) to take over at No. 3.

2010, 2011 and 2012 CWPA Division III Champion Grove City College (48 points) rounds out the Top Five for another week.

Utica College (32 points) also received votes.
