UCLA women’s swimming showed its depth, getting 10 individual event winners and posting the top time in all but one event in a comprehensive 177-115 win over Fresno State Saturday, the Bruins’ first meet of the season.

The meet was held over two days, with Fresno State’s lone win coming in the second individual event of Friday, with Athena Clayson winning the 200 backstroke in 1:58.02. Clayson would add a silver medal in the 100 back, but until UCLA started exhibitioning swimmers late, it was all Bruins.

“It’s been a challenging season and a different season, and we knew that coming in, so our goal was to practice racing all-in and see what we could do,” UCLA head coach Jordan Wolfrum said in a team statement. “That’s what we’re going to keep doing in every meet we have, because we don’t know how many chances we’ll have this year. I was really proud of the effort, energy, and attitude of our team this weekend.”

Brooke Schaffer led the Bruins onslaught. The winner of the 50 freestyle on Saturday led off the victorious 200 free relay to start the meet on Friday. The sophomore was part of all four winning relays, leading off the two free relays and anchoring the two medleys.

Stephanie Su and Kathleen Sulkevich went 1-2 in both the 500 and 1,000 free. Gabby Dang won the 100 free and the 100 butterfly. Sam Baron, winner of the 100 breaststroke, was on two winning relays, as was 100 backstroke champ Sophia Kosturos.
