U.S. to Send Team of 22 to 2023 Para World Swimming Championships

The U.S. on Friday announced a 22-athelte delegation to the 2023 Para World Swimming Championships in Manchester, England.

The team includes 16 women and six men. Last week’s Para Swimming World Series in Minneapolis was used as a selection factor, with the U.S. gleaning 40 medals.

“After some incredible performances in Minneapolis, we are very confident in the roster that we’ll be bringing to square off against the world’s best this summer,” Erin Popovich, director of U.S. Paralympics Swimming, said in a press release. “Alongside our veteran athletes who have competed at this level before, we had some newcomers step up and earn spots on their first world championships team. We can’t wait to see them race in Manchester.”

Among the team is Jessica Long, who will look to add to her voluminous history at Worlds. Long has won 52 career Worlds medals, including 35 goals. She is a 29-time Paralympic medalist.

McKenzie Coan has 16 career Worlds medals, including three golds and a relay silver from last year’s Worlds in Madeira, Portugal. Leanne Smith went 7-for-7 in her events in Madeira and is a 10-time World champion.

Veterans Hannah Aspden, Mikaela Jenkins, Elizabeth Marks and Morgan Stickney are among the mainstays for a deep American women’s team. Lizzi Smith, Colleen Young, Julia Gaffney and Ahalya Lettenberger also travel to Manchester with Paralympic medals to their names. (Not among the returnees from Worlds last year is Anastasia Pagonis, who continues to work back from an injury.)

Matthew Torres and Jamal Hill lead a comparatively thinner men’s team. The each earned two silver medals in Madeira in their Worlds debuts. Lawrence Sapp and Morgan Ray also return to Worlds.

The meet will begin on July 31.
