U.S. Nationals Psych Sheet Released: Ledecky, Dressel Lead Four Events Each; Simone Manuel Not Entered

The pre-scratch psych sheet for next week’s U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis have been released. The meet will run from Tuesday, June 27 to Saturday, July 1, with prelims beginning daily at 10 a.m. ET and finals at 7 p.m. ET. The meet will serve as a qualifier for next month’s World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan.

The top swimmers in the country over the past several years highlight the entry lists with Katie Ledecky sitting on top four women’s events, the 200, 400, 800 and 1500 freestyle, while Caeleb Dressel is the top seeds in the 50 and 100 free as well as the 50 and 100 butterfly. Dressel will be competing at a major meet for the first time since withdrawing from last year’s World Championships with health concerns. Dressel took a long hiatus from training but returned this spring and has competed in some regional meets since.

Regan Smith, meanwhile, is the top seed in the 200 butterfly, the event where she set the American record earlier this month, as well as the 100 and 200 backstroke. Smith is also entered in the 100 fly, 50 back and 200 IM. Torri Huske, the world champion in the 100 butterfly, is the top seed in that event as well as the 100 free and 50 fly. Huske is also slated to swim the 200 free, 200 IM and 50 free, an event which she won at last year’s International Team Trials. Lilly King is the No. 1 seed in all three women’s breaststroke events, and on the men’s side, Carson Foster leads the way in the 200 fly, 400 IM and 400 free while also entering the 200 free, 200 back and 200 IM.

The big news from the psych sheet release is that Simone Manuel is not entered in the meet. Manuel, the American-record holder in the 50 and 100 free, had taken a hiatus from swimming following a disappointing 2021 Olympic season, when she revealed she was diagnosed with overtraining syndrome, but she had been racing throughout this year and posting solid results while training at Arizona State University under coaches Bob Bowman and Herbie Behm. It is currently unclear why Manuel chose not to race at the all-important selection meet.
