U.S. Long Course Nationals: Peter Vanderkaay Defends As Well, Wins 400 Free – Coverage Sponsored by TYR

IRVINE, California, August 3. CLUB Wolverine's Peter Vanderkaay defended his men's 400 free long course national title at U.S. Nationals. He turned in a time of 3:46.88 for the win to trim plenty of time from his previously 14th-ranked season best of 3:48.94. Vanderkaay moved up to sixth in the world with his time tonight.

Vanderkaay has now won three out of the last four long course national titles with triumphs in 2007, 2009 and this year. Only Larsen Jensen broke up a four-straight streak with a winning effort of 3:43.53 in 2008. Vanderkaay's previous triumphant times were as follows: 2007 (3:45.55), 2009 (3:45.17) and tonight in 3:46.88.

Longhorn's Michael Klueh placed a distant second in 3:48.24 to move to eighth in the world, while FAST's Charlie Houching took home third-place honors in 3:48.30 for ninth. Mission Viejo's Chad La Tourette also cleared 3:49 with a fourth-place 3:48.76 to move into the top 15.

Club Wolverine's Matt Patton (3:51.38), Lake Forest's Conor Dwyer (3:51.57), Cincinnati Marlin David Mosko (3:52.64) and Snow's Matt McLean (3:53.23) completed the championship finale.
