U.S. International Team Trials: Chase Kalisz Edges Trenton Julian for Top Time in 200 IM Prelims

Some top contenders were missing from the men’s 200 IM prelims at the U.S. International Team Trials, but all the contenders who were presented recorded solid efforts to set themselves up for the evening race. In the final heat, Chase Kalisz posted a strong first 150 meters and then held on as Trenton Julian closed the gap. Kalisz finished in 1:58.15 for the top-qualifying mark of the morning, while Julian came in just behind at 1:58.30.

In the previous heat, Carson Foster recorded a mark of 1:58.39, while Sam Stewart came in at 1:58.78. Of the four swimmers to break 1:59, Stewart is the only one yet to qualify for the World Championships. Foster and Kalisz finished 1-2 in the 400 IM Thursday evening, while Julian was the runnerup in the 200 butterfly Tuesday. Foster and Julian finished third and fourth, respectively, in the 200 free to book 800 free relay spots for Budapest.

Missing from the field was Michael Andrew, the Olympic Trials winner and fifth-place finisher in the event at the Tokyo Olympics, as Andrew chose to focus on the 50 freestyle on the final day of the meet, while Shaine Casas did not swim the race either. Casas owns the top 2022 time among Americans in the 200 IM with the 1:56.70 he swam at the TYR Pro Swim Series in San Antonio, but Casas will only swim the 200 backstroke at the World Championships after he placed second to Ryan Murphy in that event Wednesday.

Jake Foster took fifth in 1:59.11, while Destin Lasco posted a 1:59.15 to qualify for his second A-final of the week. Kieran Smith is already on the Worlds team after winning the 200 free and 400 free, and he will race the 200 IM final after qualifying seventh in 1:59.60. Grant House placed eighth in 2:00.17.
