TYR Swim Meet of Champions: Longstanding Pool Records Highlight Second Night

MISSION VIEJO, California, April 25. THE second night of swimming at the TYR Swim Meet of Champions held in Mission Viejo, Calif., featured several longstanding pool records.

Jessica Hardy opened the second night with a pool record in the women's 100 free. Hardy hit the wall in 54.54 to crush the previous standard of 56.21 set back in 1980 by Jill Sterkel. The meet record of Britta Steffen (56.25) also fell. The time moved Hardy up into the top 25 of all time.

Madison Kennedy finished second in 56.39, while Erin Reilly placed third in 57.05.

Jason Lezak broke his own pool record in the men's 100 free with a time of 48.75. That performance nipped the 48.95 set by Matt Biondi way back in 1985. Lezak also cleared the 49-second mark for the first time at the event, dropping his meet record of 49.09 from 2005.

Gabe Woodward (50.49) and Buddy Turner (51.88) made up the rest of the top three.

Tanya Krisman dominated the women's 200 fly with a time of 2:08.66, which beat Mart T. Meagher's meet record of 2:09.08 also set back in 1985, while Noelle Tarazona (2:14.25) and Whitney Lopus (2:14.36) placed second and third, respectively.

The men's 200 fly did not feature a record as Tamas Kerekjarto stopped the clock in 2:00.40, while Patrick Cary finished second in 2:01.29. Fran Crippen of the hometown Nadadores placed third in 2:02.98.

Lauren Rogers walked away with the victory in the women's 200 back with a time of 2:17.92, while Amber McDermott (2:18.74) and Samantha Pearson (2:19.38) punched the pads second and third, respectively.

The men's 200 back featured James Martin winning in 2:05.35, while Chris Gibson (2:06.39) and Chris Good (2:07.68) rounded out the top three.

Ashley Evans earned the victory in the women's 400 free with a time of 4:18.36, while Lauren Boyle (4:18.74) and Blake Hayter (4:19.99) turned in second and third-place times.

Larsen Jensen completed the night with a meet-record time of 3:49.98 in the men's 400 free. He downed his standard set during prelims of 3:50.84, which was lower than Ous Mellouli's 3:51.44 from 2005. Crippen (3:53.40) and Charlie Rimkus (3:59.78) made up the rest of the podium.
