TYR Pro Swim Series San Antonio Day 2 Prelims: Katie Ledecky Closing in on Sub-4 400 Free

The TYR Pro Swim Series stop in San Antonio continued with the Day 2 prelims on Thursday morning.

The events of the day are the women’s and men’s 100 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and 400 freestyle.

This meet is full of star power as swimmers prepare for the Olympic Trials in the U.S. or the Paris Games for international competitors.

TYR Pro Swim Series: Women’s 100 Free

The field in the women’s 100 free was as packed as the Olympics will be as far as star power.

So packed that several Olympians did not make the final.

Hong Kong’s Siobhan Haughey, the Olympic silver medalist in this event, took the top seed heading into finals with a 53.67.

Sun Devil Aquatic’s Simone Manuel, a two-time U.S. Olympian, took the second seed in 53.88, followed by Olympic teammate Torri Huske (53.91).

Virginia NCAA champion Gretchen Walsh took the fourth seed in 54.00, followed by former college teammate Kate Douglass (54.08).

Two-time Olympian Abbey Weitzeil took the sixth spot in 54.11, followed by Tokyo Olympian Catie DeLoof (54.82) and national team upstart Erin Gemmell (54.92).

Olympians Kasia Wasick, Claire Curzan, Alex Walsh, Taylor Ruck and Olivia Smoliga were not among the top eight.

TYR Pro Swim Series: Men’s 100 Free

Caeleb Dressel snuck into the final of the 100 freestyle, snagging the eighth seed in 49.10 in a final full of international stars.

Rafael Miroslaw, swimming for Indiana, took the top seed in 48.77, ahead of Virginia Tech’s Luis Dominguez Calonge (48.85) and Germany’s Peter Varjasi (48.89).

Arizona State’s Jonny Kulow took the fourth seed in 48.93, followed by 2016 Olympian Ryan Held (48.95), Louisville’s Andrej Barna (49.03) and Matt King (49.09).

TYR Pro Swim Series: Women’s 100 Breaststroke

Olympic champion Lydia Jacoby looked in good form in the women’s 100 breast prelims and was one of two swimmers to break 1:07.

Jacoby got to the wall in 1:06.76 to finish just ahead of fellow Texas swimmer Anna Elendt (1:06.81).

Olympian Kate Douglass took the third spot in 1:57.57, just ahead of former NCAA champion Kaitlyn Dobler (1:07.88).

Olympic gold medalist Lilly King tied Argentina’s Macarena Ceballos for the sixth seed in 1:07.90, just ahead of Canadian Olympian Sydney Pickrem (1:08.30).

TYR Pro Swim Series: Men’s 100 Breaststroke

U.S. Olympian Michael Andrew took the top seed in the 100 breaststroke with an extremely quick 1:00.22.

Denis Petrashov took the second seed in 1:00.49, followed by Nic Fink (1:00.54), Noah Nichols (1:00.58) and Matthew Fallon (1:00.62).

Lyubomir Epitriopov was the only other swimmer int he field to break 1:01, finishing in 1:00.89.

Club Wolverine’s Tommy Cope took the seventh seed in 1:01.28.

The eighth spot was a tie between Carles Coll Marti and Andy Dobrzanski (1:01.39). Coll Marti won the swim off in 1:00.74 to Dobrzanski’s 1:02.32.

TYR Pro Swim Series: Women’s 200 Butterfly

Regan Smith predictably took the top seed in the 200 butterfly, crushing the field by nearly four seconds to finish in 2:05.92.

Meanwhile, also predictably, three Texas swimmers were in the next five seeds heading into finals.

Former Texas All-American Dakota Luther took the second spot in 2:09.55, just ahead of Arizona State’s Lindsay Looney (2:10.29).

Texas NCAA champion Emma Sticklen took the fourth seed in 2:11.45, ahead of Leah Gingrich (2:11.84).

Texas All-American Kelly Pash took the sixth spot in 2:11.95, ahead of Tess Howley and Caroline Bricker, who tied for seventh at 2:12.08.

 

TYR Pro Swim Series: Men’s 200 Butterfly

Four swimmers were within 13 hundredths of a second from each other in the prelims of the 200 butterfly on the men’s side – and three train with Sun Devil Aquatics.

Olympic champion Chase Kalisz took the top seed in 1:57.54, ahead of Dart’s Luca Urlando (1:57.64).

Arizona State NCAA champion Leon Marchand took the third seed in 1:57.675, ahead of teammate Ilya Kharun (1:57.67).

Jack Dahlgren (1:58.03), Trenton Julian (1:59.02), Zach Harting (1:59.15) and Vili Sivec (1:59.55) rounded out the top eight.

 

TYR Pro Swim Series: Women’s 400 Free

Katie Ledecky was well ahead of the field in prelims as expected and took the top seed in the 400 free in 4:02.72.

Ledecky was the fastest by nearly seven seconds. She did not compete in the 1500 free and unleashed a stellar prelims swim, looking like a sub-4 is possible in the finals.

Paige Madden, who won the 1500 on Wednesday, took the second seed in 4:09.41.

Jillian Cox was third in 4:10.41, ahead of Stanford’s Aurora Roghair (4:11.19), Texas’ Erin Gemmell (4:11.80) and Indiana’s Anna Peplowski (4.12.90).

TYR Pro Swim Series: Men’s 400 Free

Guilherme Costa led a trio of sub-3:50s in the men’s 400 free to close out the session.

Costa finished in 3:49.42 to earn the top seed in tonight’s final.

Cal’s Lucas Heneveaux was second at 3:49.67, followed by Alfonso Mestre (3:49.79).

Carson Foster took the fourth spot at 3:50.27, ahead of David Johnston (3:50.65) and Ilia Sibertsev (3:50.67).

Kieran Smith took the seventh seed (3:51.48) and Drew Kibler grabbed the eighth (3:51.38), which left Bobby Finke and Jay Litherland just outside the final.
