TYR Pro Swim Series Mission Viejo: Curzan, Huske, Weitzeil Set for 50 Fly Battle

The women’s 50-meter butterfly at the TYR Pro Swim Series Mission Viejo meet brought out the stars Friday morning to set up what could be a thrilling final.

Claire Curzan led the way in prelims at the Marguerite Aquatic Center with a time of 26.38 seconds. Second was fellow Olympian Torri Huske in 26.46, with Abbey Weitzeil following in 26.58. Also among the finalists in sixth is Polish international Kasia Wasick in 27.08.

Curzan returned later in the session to take the top time in the 200 backstroke in 2:12.11, where she edged out Cal’s Isabelle Stadden by.25 seconds. Olympian Rhyan White was third.

Elsewhere in the second of three prelims sessions:

Ryan Murphy finished just sixth in the men’s 200 back, with a time of 2:01.37. That was 2.5 seconds back of the pace set by Keaton Jones at 1:58.89. Cal’s Destin Lasco and Hugo Gonzalez were second and third, respectively.

Bella Sims led the way in the 200 free with a time of 2:01.19. She was .02 up on Aurora Roghair. Seven swimmers were sub 2:02, including Kelly Pash and Olivia Smoliga. Huske finished ninth in 2:02.20, a swim she will likely skip out of finals for.

Michael Cotter of TAC Titans was quickest in a jumbled men’s 200 free in 1:49.15, with .61 seconds blanketing the top eight finishers. That group includes a rehash of NCAAs in the sprint – Cal’s Robin Hanson second, followed by Gabriel Jett of Cal, Coby Carrozza of Texas, Jack Dahlgren of Missouri, Alabama’s Charlie Hawke, Arizona State’s Grant House and Cal’s Trenton Julian, eighth in 1:49.76. Baylor Nelson of Texas A&M was ninth, while Ryan Held finished 12th.

Lilly King is the second seed in the women’s 50 breaststroke final with a time of 31.32 seconds in prelims. Skyler Smith took the top spot in 31.17. Kaitlyn Dobler was third in 31.49, and Gillian Tu was the only other sub-32 performer of prelims.

The second seed went to Jake Foster in 28.08, Foster having been the runner-up in the 100 breast. Matthew Jensen of Cal was third.

Held was quickest in prelims of the 50 fly in 23.81. That bested Hunter Armstrong (24.04) and Youssef Ramadan (24.05).
