Two National Records by Madelyn Moore Close Out CCCAN Championships

Bermuda’s Madelyn Moore set national records in the women’s 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly on the last two days of the Central American and Caribbean Swimming (CCCAN) Championships in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Moore won the 50 free in 25.82 on Saturday. She had gone 25.77 in prelims. Second in that race was Allyson Ponson of Aruba.

On Sunday, Moore clocked in at 1:02.21 to take down the Bermuda mark in the 100 fly. Second was Julimar Avila in a Honduran record of 1:02.31, with Celismar Guzman third. Guzman won the 100 back in 1:04.12 on Saturday, .14 ahead of Carmen Marquez.

Another Honduran record went down Saturday in the hands of Michell Ramirez, who won the 200 fly in 2:17.32. Avila set a national record for the country in the 50 breaststroke of 34.09, a cut of 1.5 seconds off the national record that had held since 2013. Avila was third in her race, behind Aruba’s Anahi Schreuders (33.32) and Puerto Rico’s Marissa Lugo (33.42). Fourth in the race was Elisa Funes with a Salvadoran record of 33.77 in prelims.

Jarod Arroyo picked up another win for the host nation by going 4:17.94 in the 400 individual medley Saturday. Puerto Ricans swept the men’s events on the night. Louis Ortiz won the men’s 50 free in 22.82, a tenth ahead of Aruba’s Mikel Schreuders. Yeziel Morales dominated the men’s 100 back by more than 1.75 seconds to win in 55.09. Victor Rosado claimed the 200 fly in 2:01.74. Morales also won the 200 back on Sunday.

In Sunday’s action, Ramirez won the 400 free in 4:26.83. Kristen Romano buzzed within .05 of her Puerto Rican record from 2018 in the women’s 200 back, clocking in at 2:13.78. Second was El Salvador’s Marquez.

Marcelo Acosta won the men’s 400 free in 3:58.51. Andrew Martijena outdueled Luis Ramirez of Venezuela for the win in the 50 breast in 28.94.
