Toshiba Classic, Day Three

LONG BEACH, California, November 21. JULIA Smit broke the school-record in the 200 backstroke, posting a time of 1:52.83 as the Cardinal finished off the Toshiba Cup with five more wins on Saturday. It is her fourth individual school-record on The Farm.

Smit for the three-day meet won three events, today's backstroke, as well as the 200 and 400 individual medleys, all "A" standard times for the 19-time All-American. Smit broke Misty Hyman's 11-year old record of 1:53.12 in 1998 to finish off the weekend. She was also a part of three winning freestyle relay teams, the 200 and 800 earlier this week, and today, the 400 relay.

Smit anchored the winning 400 relay team, finishing with a "B" standard time of 3:17.28, teaming with Betsy Webb, Sam Woodward and Kate Dwelley for the win.

Dwelley led three Cardinal in the 100 freestyle with a best of 48.57, ahead of Webb (48.90) and Woodward (49.10), all "B" standard times.

Kelsey Ditto completed a solid showing in Long Beach by winning the 1650 freestyle with a "B" standard time of 16:12.25. It was Ditto's second individual win, as she set the meet record in the 500 on Thursday.

Liz Smith and Alisa Finn led the 200 breaststroke with times of 2:12.54 and 2:12.84.

In Arizona on the second of three days at the Wildcat Diving Invite, Meg Hostage led three Cardinal in the finals of the one-meter, finishing fourth with a score of 267.45. Carmen Stellar was sixth (260.65) and Mary Beth Corbett eighth (245.40).

Meanwhile, the Cardinal men swept past the field of the Toshiba Classic winning all 18 events they entered, as Austin Staab and Matt Thompson each won their third events, in as many days.

In Arizona, at the second of three days of the Wildcat Diving Invite, Brent Eichenseer was second in the three-meter event with a score of 364.60, while Taylor Sishc was fourth, with a score of 312.30.

Staab, who also won the 50 free and 100 fly, closed out the meet with a time of 43.93 in the 100, a "B" standard time. For Thompson, he along with fellow freshman, Matthew Swanston, led the field in the 200 backstroke, posting times of 1:44.39 and 1:44.47, respectively for a couple of more "B" standard times. Thompson won both individual medleys earlier this weekend.

The school's top two 200 butterfliers, Bobby Bollier and David Mosko, did just that on Saturday, falling four seconds short of the top-two times in school-history, but leading the field with time of 1:45.37 and 1:45.78, respectively. Both were "A" standard times.

Chad La Tourette won his second distance event of the meet, taking the 1650 with a "B" time of 14:56.20. Curtis Lovelace and John Christe finished off the 200 breaststroke in front of the pack, swimming 1:58.04 and 1:58.97, respectively.
