Tom Stubbs Relays

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio, October 14. THE 2011-12 Bowling Green State University swimming team got their first glimpse of outside competition on Friday (Oct. 14) at the annual Tom Stubbs Relays exhibition meet. The event was held at BGSU's Cooper Pool.
Relay teams from Akron, Toledo and Youngstown State joined the Falcons in ten challenging relays on Friday afternoon. Bowling Green took top honors in two of the ten relays and finished second in five others. In total, the Falcons finished in the top three of each race.

For the second consecutive year, BGSU swimmers set a new meet standard in the 200 freestyle relay. Last year, the Falcons swam the distance in 1:36.55. On Friday,Emily Bennet,Brittany Szekely and Sarah Reinink — three members of the 2010 record-setting relay — returned and broke their own record by 0.39 seconds.

Freshman Allie Reynolds joined Bennet, Szekely and Reinink as the group finished in 1:36.16 and won the race by nearly one second.

Bowling Green's other victory was also a record-setter. Bennet, Szekely and Reinink combined withJen Beatty to swim the 400 yard freestyle in 3:31.10. The group broke the previous meet record, set six years ago, by over two seconds.

Toledo, who won the Mid-American Conference championship in 2010 and was runner-up in 2011, won the other eight events and set five meet records in the process. However, the Falcons followed the Rockets closely in several of those events.

In the 200 medley relay, the Falcons finished less than one second behind Toledo as the BGSU "A" squad posted a time of 1:46.45. Bowling Green's primary time (2:56.45) in the 300 backstroke relay was less than two seconds behind Toledo.

Falcon teams also finished second in the 300 breaststroke relay, 400 medley relay and 1500 freestyle relay. BGSU swimmers placed third in the 4×100 individual medley relay, the 300 butterfly relay and the 800 freestyle relay.

BGSU head coach Petra Martin fielded two teams in all but one of the ten relays, and the Falcons' second teams also fared well. The second team in the 400 freestyle relay placed fourth, while Bowling Green earned fifth place in three other events.

Martin said, "I am pleased with what we were able to do today. We still have many things to work on, but our times were faster than they were at last week's meet and the girls are starting to become more aggressive in the pool."

Martin and the Falcons host the Jean Campbell Alumni meet on Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. and then have one week to prepare for the regular season opener. BGSU hosts a triangular meet with John Carroll and Oakland on Saturday, Oct. 22 in Fremont, Ohio.
