Jenny Thompson was named the 1998 Swimmer of the Year and also received the Phillips Performance Award, sweeping the top honors at the USA Swimming convention in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Thompson (Dover, N.H./Stanford Swimming) became the first American since Tracy Caulkins in 1978 to win four gold medals at the World Championships. She won gold in the 100m freestyle, 100m butterfly, 400m free relay and 400m medley relay (American record), while also earning silver in the 800m freestyle relay. Thompson turned in the fastest 100m fly relay split in history (57.89). At the Goodwill Games, she captured two gold, two silver and a bronze. At the Summer Nationals, Thompson won the 100m free and 100m fly to become the 16th swimmer in history to record 20 career U.S. national titles.
