Thompson Wins 100m Freestyle At World Championships

PERTH, AUSTRALIA – USA’s Jenny Thompson earned her first individual gold medal at a World Championships or Olympic Games by winning the 100m freestyle, the first event at the VIII World Swimming Championships in Perth, Australia.

The 24-year-old Thompson, who won five Olympic gold medals – all in relays – won in a time of 54.95 seconds, edging Slovakia’s Martina Moravcova, who swam a 55.09. Ying Shan of China edged American Amy Van Dyken, 55.10 to 55.15, to take third.

Thompson was third to the wall at 50m with Germany’s Sandra Voelker (26.24) and Van Dyken (26.32) out fast, then Thompson took the lead at 75m, but was challenged all the way to the finish.
