Thirteen IUPUI Swimmers and Divers Named to Mid-Con All Confrence Team

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind, December 11. EIGHT members of the IUPUI men’s swimming and diving team earned All-Conference honors at the recent Mid-Continent Conference Swimming and Diving Championships.

Senior A.J. Parks (Bremen, Ind./Bremen/School Technology) was the conference champion in the 100 freestyle, earning First Team All-Conference recognition. His winning time of 46.45 was the second-quickest in school history, just .08 seconds off the school record. He also set a school record and finished second in the 50 freestyle. His time of 20.73 was .36 seconds better than the old record he already held.

Freshman Brian Wheeler (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point/University College) was named Second Team All-Conference for his second place finish in the 1650 freestyle. His time of 16:40.70 was a team season-best in the event.

Four IUPUI relay teams swam to second-places finishes, earning their members Second Team All-Conference recognition.

The team of Parks, senior Grant Anderson (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike/School of Physical Education & Tourism Management), sophomore Rob Trame (Syracuse, Ind./Wawasee/University College) and freshman Chris Hutchison (Indianapolis, Ind./Decatur Central/School of Engineering) had a season-best time of 1:36.48 in the 200 medley relay.

The team of Parks, Anderson, Trame and sophomore Brett Ellsworth (Jasper, Ind./Jasper/University College) splashed to the third-quickest time in school history (1:25.87) in the 200 free relay.

Parks, Anderson, Ellsworth and Wheeler had the fifth-fastest time (3:13.10) in school history in the 400 free relay.

The quartet of Wheeler, Hutchison, junior Preston Ray (Columbus, Ind./Columbus East/School of Technology) and sophomore Damien Vittorio (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central/University College) also achieved a season-best time of 7:15.99 in the 800 free relay.

Five members of the IUPUI women’s swim team earned Second Team All-Conference honors at the recent Mid-Continent Conference Swimming and Diving Championships. The five swimmers were members of four relay teams that finished second, posting three school records and another team season-best time.

Junior Clare Helphinstine (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield/School of Physical Education & Tourism Management) and sophomores Lindsay Corn (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli/School of Technology), Kristen Krey (Decatur, Ind./Bellmont/University College) and Kelly Miller (Aurora, Ohio/Twinsburg/University College) started off the meet with a season-best time of 1:51.60 in the 200 medley relay.

Things only got better from there as IUPUI teams set school records in every remaining relay event. Sophomore Brandi Kropf (Middlebury, Ind./Northridge/School of Education) joined Corn, Miller and Krey on the 200 free relay team that opened the second day of finals competition. The quartet’s time of 1:39.20 shaved .48 seconds off the previous record.

Kropf, Helphinstine, Miller and Krey teamed on the 400 medley relay that broke a school record that had stood for nearly four years. Their time of 4:04.46 knocked 1.63 seconds off the old mark that had been set in Feb. 2003.

Corn, Kropf, Miller and Krey closed out the meet by setting the 400 free relay record. They splashed to a time of 3:39.90, 1.24 seconds better than the old mark.

Kropf was also a member of the 800 freestyle relay team whose time of 8:17.70 broke the school record by 3.41 seconds in their fourth place finish.
