The Morning Swim Show, April 23, 2012: Logan Todhunter Relives Experience of Representing Williams College

PHOENIX, Arizona, April 23. TODAY'S edition of The Morning Swim Show features 11-time NCAA Division III individual national champion Logan Todhunter.

Todhunter talks about “the one that got away,” the 200 IM her freshman as the only event she was unable to win at nationals. She also looks back on being part of the team at Williams College and why she chose to be a part of a Division III school instead of a Division I school. Peter Busch: This is the Morning Swim Show for Monday, April 23rd, 2012. I am your host Peter Busch. In the FINIS Monitor today, we will talk to Logan Toddhunter. She won 11 NCAA Division III individual swim titles during her time at Williams College and Logan joins us right now in the FINIS Monitor from Williamstown, Massachusetts. Hi Logan, welcome to the Morning Swim Show, how are you?

Logan Todhunter: Good thank you. How are you?

Peter Busch: Good, so only 11 titles you couldn't win all 12?

Logan Todhunter: That 200 IM freshman year killed me.

Peter Busch: That is the one that got away?

Logan Todhunter: That is the one that got away.

Peter Busch: That is the one we remember the most, right?

Logan Todhunter: Yes, probably true.

Peter Busch: Well congratulations on amazing success at the DIII level during your years there. You just wrapped up. Senior year, you won the, so you won the 100, 200 fly all four years?

Logan Todhunter: I did, I did

Peter Busch: So breaststroke is your best event then?

Logan Todhunter: (Laughs) Totally.

Peter Busch: All right, well tell me about, tell us about Williams College and how you ended up there.

Logan Todhunter: So Williams college is a small liberal arts school with about 2,000 students, division III and you know looking at schools I was kind of torn between division I and division III, but then as senior year got close I realize that I wanted a smaller school and I didn't want you know to be at a big DI power house swimming school I guess. I wanted to feel like I was really going to contribute to the team and play like you know hopefully I could pretty significant role and so I went on, I decided division 3 went on a few recruit trips and you know met the team here, met coach and I was sold after spending a weekend here.

Peter Busch: How long have you been swimming?

Logan Todhunter: I have been swimming pretty much my entire life competitively swimming meets since about 7.

Peter Busch: Very nice and how big is the team there. Is it guys and girls team or is it just ladies?

Logan Todhunter: It is guys and girls which is fun. I enjoy it. This year girl's team was about 28 and the guys were 35 and we trained with the guys which is, which was also like a draw to swimming at Williams. I like having you know, the boys in the water with you.

Peter Busch: How did you do as a team?

Logan Todhunter: We did really well as a team. I think we kind of surprised ourselves you know, both NESCACs and nationals the boys and — the men and women's team both pulled through and then we came together at nationals, the group of us, and then you kind of feed off of each other and you know if someone has a great swim and gets to make you excited and you know then you have a good swim and it was really good.

Peter Busch: Fun way to end your senior year, right?

Logan Todhunter: Couldn't have asked for much more.

Peter Busch: So looking back on it, four years of swimming regardless to the division, what did you learn from swimming in college that you are going to apply to your career?

Logan Todhunter: Well I think one of the big things that you learn is you learn how to be a part of the team and you learn how to work with other people and you have a goal that you want to accomplish and you can't be an individual on the team. It takes everyone coming together and marking with each other. Sometimes you have your differences, but you have this goal that you all want to accomplish and it gets you through each practice and I think I have actually carry over to you know in the future you have to learn how to work with other people and so I guess that will go a long ways.

Peter Busch: Do you graduate coming up and if so what is the next plan?

Logan Todhunter: I do graduate on early June. I don't really like to think about it. And the next plan is hopefully med school in a couple of years. It has been my dream since I can remember so that is the goal.

Peter Busch: So last four years weren't busy enough for you, now you want to go to med school?

Logan Todhunter: Yeah, you know I just wanted, I had such a great four years here. Might as well stay in school for another seven years.

Peter Busch: Maybe take up lacrosse or something win some more national titles.

Logan Todhunter: There we go. Try something on my feet. I am not quite sure how it worked out but you know I could give it a shot, anything to stay on the team for longer. I will take it.

Peter Busch: Where are you from Logan?

Logan Todhunter: I am from Ithaca, New York so both my parents are veterinarians at Cornell.

Peter Busch: Oh very nice.

Logan Todhunter: Yes.

Peter Busch: Yeah so there is no one smart in your family at all. It doesn't sound like.

Logan Todhunter: Well I got three younger siblings behind me, yeah.

Peter Busch: Any of them swimmers?

Logan Todhunter: My two younger brothers and younger sister and she is a swimmer and they are all very smart so we will see especially where she ends up. I hope she continues to swim.

Peter Busch: You seem like you got a good head on your shoulders and again congratulations on an amazing run there at Williams College.

Logan Todhunter: Thank you so much. Thank you.

Peter Busch: Okay don't let that 200 IM from freshman year keep you up at night.

Logan Todhunter: I will try not to, I promise. Thank you.

Peter Busch: Logan thanks for joining us. Good luck in the future.

Logan Todhunter: Thank you. Bye Peter.

Peter Busch: That is Logan Todhunter joining us from William's College and that is it for today's show. I am Peter busy reminding you to keep your head down at the finish.
