Texas Longhorns Take Round Three in Relay Battle With Cal to Win 400 Medley Relay

The Texas Longhorns finished Thursday night of the 2021 NCAA Division I Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships with a flourish as the team of Chris Staka (45.02), Caspar Corbeau (50.36), Alvin Jiang (44.05) and Daniel Krueger (40.80) won with a 3:00.23 over California (3:00.73) in a dog fight from the start.

The Golden Bears finished in second in a tremendous fight with the team of Destin Lasco (45.28), Reece Whitley (50.58), Ryan Hoffer (43.80) and Bjorn Seeliger (41.07) as they hold the lead through seven events by 27 points

The Louisville Cardinals nearly stole the relay win from the penultimate heat but ended up fourth at 3:01.52, just getting out-touched by Florida (3:01.51). The Gators picked up 32 big points in their pursuit for a top three finish with the team of Adam Chaney (45.36), Dillon Hillis (50.27), Eric Friese (44.66) and Kieran Smith (41.22) as they are well in front of Georgia for third place.

Louisville’s team of Mitchell Whyte (45.03), Evgenii Somov (50.68), Nick Albiero (44.09) and Haridi Sameh (41.72) picked up 30 big points for the team as Louisville now sits eighth in the standings and has a big day on Friday to move up with potential stroke winners Somov and Albiero in contention in their events tomorrow.

Although none of the guys swam the fastest split of all-time, the fastest splits from Florida’s Hillis (50.27), Cal’s Hoffer (43.80) and Texas’ Krueger were among the fastest in history of Kevin Cordes (49.56), Joseph Schooling (43.34) and Caeleb Dressel (40.15).

Indiana (3:02.38), Michigan (3:04.00), Missouri (3:04.34) and NC State (3:04.47) also placed in the top eight.

The quickest splits outside the top four came from Texas A&M’s Shaine Casas (44.47), Indiana’s Zane Backes (50.68), Virginia Tech’s Antani Ivanov (44.20) and Alabama’s Matt King (41.48).

Texas has now won 15 NCAA titles in the 400 medley relay, the most of any school.
