Texas, Indiana vs. Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Michigan, October 28. THE University of Texas Women’s Swimming & Diving earned victories over Indiana and Michigan in a double dual on Friday at the Canham Natatorium in Ann Arbor, Mich.
The Longhorns outscored Indiana, 165-133, and also beat the host school Michigan, 189-109. Texas is off to a great start to the year with the two wins today and a first place finish last weekend at the SMU Classic in Dallas.

“This is a great meet,” said head coach Kim Brackin. “Between Indiana and Michigan there is always a great race to be had in each heat of every event. We saw some strong racing skills and worked on strategy and finishing well overall. I think the times were indicative of the time of the season.”

Texas won the first three events on the day and eight of the 16 total events on the day. The Longhorns were led by Leah Gingrich and Laura Sogar. Gingrich took first place in the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.34), 500-yard freestyle (4:46.22) and 400-yard IM (4:17.27). Sogar won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.91) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:15.77) while coming in sixth in the 400-yard IM (4:25.87).

“Leah Gingrich was great across the board,” said Brackin. “She is focused and happy – a great combination!”

The Longhorns claimed a victory in the 400-yard medley relay to start the day. Lily Moldenhauer, Sogar, Kelsey Amundsen and Karlee Bispo combined for a first place time of 3:43.95.

In the long distance event, the 1650 freestyle, a pair of Texas freshmen claimed the top two times as Kaitlin Pawlowicz swam a 16:17.45 for first and Kelsey LeNeave took second with a time of 16:43.61. It was the first race of LeNeave’s career.

The Longhorns also had the top two finishers in the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard butterfly. Freshman Gretchen Jaques finished right behind Sogar in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.70. Pawlowicz won her second race of the day in the 200 butterfly (2:01.20) and was followed up by sophomore Ellen Lobb (2:01.55).

The 400-yard IM was a particularly strong event for Texas as three of the top four finishers were Longhorns and also placed five in the top eight. After Gingrich was freshman Skylar Smith in third, LeNeave in fourth, Sogar in sixth and Leah Reinhardt in eighth.

Junior Samantha Holland had the top diving performance for the Longhorns, claiming second in the three-meter diving competition with 291.80 points.

Other notable finishes for the Longhorns included Bethany Adams and Jacques finishing second and third, respectively, in the 50-yard freestyle, Bispo claiming second in the 100-yard freestyle and Lobb taking second in the 100-yard butterfly.

Texas will host its first meet next Friday with Texas A&M visiting Austin for a dual. The meet will be televised live by the Longhorn Network and will begin at 6 p.m.
