Texas is currently chasing its own record for the most event titles by a team at the NCAA Division I Men’s Championships.

Texas set the record with 11 victories in 2001.

Most Event Titles In A Year:

11 – Texas – 2001
9 – Ohio State -1954
9 – Indiana – 1969
9 – Stanford – 1992
8 – Michigan – 1937
8 – Ohio State – 1955
8 – Southern California – 1964-77
8 – Indiana – 1971
8 – Stanford – 1985-94-95-98

The dominant 2001 squad had 11 victories, and had a much bigger contribution by its diving crew than this year’s squad as Troy Dumais added a pair of wins for the Longhorns.

2001:

200 back: Nate Dusing, 1:41.52
100 breast: Brendan Hansen, 52.35
200 breast: Brendan Hansen, 1:53.11
100 fly: Ian Crocker, 45.96
200 IM: Nate Dusing, 1:42.85
400 free relay: Nate Dusing, Ian Crocker, Tom Hannan, Jamie Rauch, 2:49.80
800 free relay: Scott Goldblatt, Nate Dusing, Chris Kemp, Jamie Rauch, 6:18.00
200 medley relay: Matt Ulrickson, Brendan Hansen, Nate Dusing, Leffie Crawford, 1:24.47
400 medley relay: Nate Dusing, Brendan Hansen, Tom Hannan, Ian Crocker, 3:05.37
One-meter diving: Troy Dumais, 397.60
Three-meter diving: Troy Dumais, 664.70

Texas has seven wins so far this year.

2016:

800 free relay: Jack Conger, Townley Haas, Clark Smith, Joseph Schooling, 6:08.03
200 free relay: Brett Ringgold, Joseph Schooling, Jack Conger, John Murray, 1:14.88
500 free: Townley Haas, 4:09.00
200 IM: Will Licon, 1:40.04
400 Medley Relay: John Shebat, Will Licon, Joseph Schooling, Jack Conger, 3:00.68
100 fly: Joseph Schooling, 44.01
200 free: Townley Haas, 1:30.46

For Texas to tie the record, it needs four more wins, and there’s a chance for that to happen on the final day based on seeds.  The 200 back (Cal’s Ryan Murphy) and 100 free (Florida’s Caeleb Dressel) are likely outside of Texas’ grasp, but it still has a shot at tying the record.  To break it, the Longhorns will have to hold seed and pull off an upset.

Potential Day 4 Wins:

Clark Smith: 1650 free top seed
Will Licon: 200 breast top seed
Joseph Schooling, Jack Conger: 200 fly top seeds
400 free relay: top 3 seed
