Texas A&M Women Roll Nebraska (178-117), Missouri (187-101)

LINCOLN, Nebraska, October 14. THE Texas A&M women’s swimming & diving team earned a pair of dual meet victories over Missouri and Nebraska at the Devaney Center Natatorium on Saturday morning.

The Aggies won 11 of 16 events in recording 187-101 and 178-117 victories over Missouri and Nebraska, respectively.

A&M was led on Saturday by versatile sophomore Julia Wilkinson (Stratford, Ont.). The Canadian national champion in the 200-yard individual medley won not only that event in an NCAA consideration time of 2:03.92 but also grabbed wins in the 100 backstroke (56.28) and 100 freestyle (50.70; another NCAA consideration mark).

Freshman Alia Atkinson (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) continued her weekend coming-out party by grabbing wins in both the 50 freestyle (23.62) and the 100 breaststroke (1:04.96).

Senior Kara Morelli (Scottsdale, Ariz.) grabbed a tight 200 butterfly race in 2:07.10 for her first win of the season. Junior Erin Mahoney slipped by two Missouri Tigers at the wall to take second in 2:08.23.

The Aggies’ sprint freestyle corps proved too much for the field to handle as it turned in 1-2-3 finishes in both the 50 and 100 yard races. Atkinson, sophomore Triin Aljand (Tallinn, Estonia) and senior Rebecca Sturdy (Anacortes, Wash.) grabbed the top three spots in the 50 free while Wilkinson, Aljand, and Sturdy did likewise in the 100 free.

Sophomore Kristen Heiss (Casper, Wyo.) led a 1-2-3 A&M finish in the 200-yard backstroke. Heiss grabbed the top spot in 2:03.67 while freshman Emily Neal (Plano) and Morelli came in right behind her. Freestyle specialist Codie Hansen (Arlington) swam in the non-scoring heat of the 200 back moments earlier, springing what would have been the winning time of 2:03.39 on the field.

Junior Brittany Lentz (Humble) cruised to a win in the 200-yard breaststroke, recording a time of 2:22.32.

Sophomore Christine Marshall convincingly captured the 100 butterfly in 56.20 while Atkinson was third in 57.77.

The Aggies bookended their meet by sweeping both relay events. The group of Aljand, Atkinson, Marshall, and Sturdy won the 200 medley relay in 1:44.63 while junior Beth McCullough (Austin), Mahoney, junior Megan Rains (Puyallup, Wash.) and Heiss won the 800 free relay in 7:29.53. The Aggies took second place in both relays as well.

Freshman diver Alex Tipple (Thunder Bay, Ont.) took fourth-place in the three-meter springboard with a score of 208.80 while placing fifth on the one-meter with 191.90 points.
