Swimming teams around the country from all levels have recently dedicated practice time to participating in the Ted Mullin Hour of Power. This year’s event occured a day after the tenth anniversary of the first, Nov. 6, 2006, and honors the memory of former Carleton College swimmer Ted Mullin.

Mullin suffered from sarcoma, a rare form of connective tissue cancer, and he passed away Sept. 3, 2006. After his death, his teammates on the Carlton Swimming and Diving team conceived the idea for this event, a continuous hour-long relay that would raise awareness about sarcoma and raise funds for sarcoma research. 11 other Division III college teams, along with one high school team and two club teams participated in the inaugural event.

The event has grown to as large as 183 teams and 8700 athletes in 2014, and this year’s figures to be large as well, with over 150 teams already registered. The event has raised more than $500,000 in its first decade, and the money is funneled into the Ted Mullin Fund, which in turn goes towards sarcoma research at The University of Chicago Medicine.

All-out effort is encouraged for the full hour, and the objective is to keep all relay squads on the same lap. The Hour of Power had been one of Ted’s favorite practice sets while at Carleton.
