Team USA Announces Open Water Schedule

With 10 standout swimmers set to represent Team USA, the open water portion of the 2017 FINA World Championships opens Saturday at Lake Balaton, Hungary.

Olympians and defending world champions Haley Anderson (Granite Bay, Calif./Trojan Swim Club) and 2016 Olympian Jordan Wilimovsky(Malibu, Calif./Team Santa Monica) will lead the way for the United States across six days of competition.

Saturday, July 15: Men’s 5-Kilometer

  • Andrew Gemmell (Wilmington, Del./Nation’s Capital Swim Club) will look for his third career world championships medal and first since 2011. He was the 10K silver medalist in 2009.
  • David Heron (Mission Viejo, Calif./University of Tennessee) is making his second career world championships appearance. He won the 5K title at 2017 Open Water Nationals.

Sunday, July 16: Women’s 10K

  • Ashley Twichell (Fayetteville, N.Y./North Carolina Aquatic Club) won the 2017 national title in the 10K in convincing fashion. She is making her third world championships appearance and won gold in the 2011 5K team relay.
  • Anderson was the 2012 Olympic silver medalist in the 10K and placed fifth at the 2016 Olympic Games. She was ninth at the 2015 FINA World Championships in the event.

Tuesday, July 18: Men’s 10K

  • Wilimovsky is the defending world champion in the men’s 10K, having won the 2015 title in Kazan, Russia. He is the 2017 national champion in the event and is making his third FINA World Championships appearance.
  • Brendan Casey (Santa Monica, Calif./Unattached) will make his world championships debut alongside Wilimovsky in the men’s 10K.

Wednesday, July 19: Women’s 5K

  • The 2017 national champion in the 5K, Anderson is the two-time defending world champion in the event with titles in 2013 and 2015. She will be joined by Twichell in the race.
  • The U.S. has won nine all-time world championships medals in the women’s 5K, more than any other open water event.

Thursday, July 20: 5K Team Relay

  • The United States won gold in this event at the 2011 FINA World Championships.

Friday, July 21: Men’s and Women’s 25K

  • The women’s 25K will feature Becca Mann (Homer Glenn, Ill./Trojan Swim Club) and rookie Cathryn Salladin (Yorba Linda, Calif./FAST Swim Team. Mann is making her third FINA World Championships appearance.
  • Chip Peterson (Pine Knoll Shores, N.C/North Carolina Aquatic Club) makes his return to the world championships for the first time since 2010 in the men’s 25K. He owns three open water world championships medals and was the 10K world champion in 2005.
  • Simon Lamar (Sonora, Calif./FAST Swim Team) makes his world championships debut alongside Peterson.

The team is led by head coach Dave Kelsheimer of Team Santa Monica and assisted by Rich DeSelm of the North Carolina Aquatic Club.
