Swim MAC Carolina’s Tanya Hobbs won the creative coaches award at the 2019 American Swimming Coaches Association World Clinic in Dallas, Texas for the ‘tamales set.’ Coaches from around the world submit their ideas for innovative ways to make workouts more fun for athletes or work on various aspects of technique in interesting ways.

Each year, the top four ideas get a cash prize and their inventors are recognized at the awards banquet.

  • 4th place: Courtney Spielman – Swim by the Cards ($100)
  • 3rd place: Rick Mills – Race Day Goal Setting ($200)
  • 2nd place: Brandon Converse – Fantasy Swim ($300)

The set is as follows:

The “Hot Tamale” set consist of 10 X 200 IM designed like Nascar with pit stops in between. It is all out from start to finish with 9 pit stops. You can do it individually or do it as teams. Your choice. Pit stops are the most fun but require much focus:
  1. cup stacking
  2. blow up 2 balloons size of a bball and have to tie a knot
  3. hula hooping for 1:00 straight with no dropping (if so start again)
  4. 2 bball shots in the hoop (have to make 2 before moving on)
  5. bowling with water bottle and a med ball ( 20 feet and goal is to try to hit the bottle with the med ball)
  6. plank hold for 1:00 straight
  7. wall sits for 1:00
  8. med ball throws against wall for 1:00
  9. recite the National Anthem
