Swimming World Radio Talks with Mark Schubert About Brendan Hansen’s Withdrawal
MELBOURNE, Australia, March 28. LISTEN to National Team Head Coach Mark Schubert describe the events surrounding Brendan Hansen, forced to withdrawal from the 200 breaststroke Thursday morning due to sickness. The defending champion and world-record holder in the event, Hansen was tended to throughout the evening by Team USA physician Ken Haller.
Hansen woke in the morning and completed a pair of laps in the hotel pool, but was overcome by cramps and doubled over. Haller then determined that Hansen could not race in the preliminary heats of the 200 breast. The United States is hopeful that Hansen will recover in time to handle the breaststroke leg on the 400 medley relay, slated for the last night of competition.
Hear Schubert discuss what happened with Hansen and how his situation was handled, including the use of intravenous fluids to combat dehydration.
