Up & Comers: Fox Valley Swim Team’s McKenna Stone

By Shoshanna Rutemiller

Sixteen-year-old McKenna Stone of Fox Valley Swim Team (Naperville and Aurora, Ill.) understands the hard work and dedication it takes to become a successful swimmer. At age 12, after completing her first select camp, she set a goal to make it to the 2020 Olympic Trials.

Four years later, she accomplished her goal at the NCSA Summer Championships in Indianapolis, Aug. 6-10, with a 25.81 50 meter freestyle.

“She’s a tenacious racer,” says her coach, Dave Krotiak. “When she goes in, she’s so determined. The bigger the meet, the better.”

This race-first mentality helped Stone and her teammates nearly topple the girls’ 15-16 400 meter freestyle relay national age group record, also at the NCSA Summer Champs. Stone, Tiffanie Ruan, Rachel Stege and Megan Ciezczak posted a 3:48.63 for an NCSA record and only 35-hundredths off the 3:48.28 NAG mark set in 2014 by Carmel (Ind.) Swim Club.
