Swimming a personal best is exciting for swimmers of all ages, and it’s especially exciting when that time earns the swimmer her first qualifying standard.

That’s exactly what happened for 14-year-old Abi Furqueron of the Spokane Waves Aquatic Team when she dropped nearly three-and-a-half seconds off her previous best (swum 11 months earlier) in the girls 100 yard breast. Her 1:04.29 at the Pacific Northwest Washington State Senior Short Course Championships last December qualified her for Winter Juniors. Furqueron, who began swimming competitively at the age of 10, first learned how to swim at a Japanese swim school in northern Japan when she was 4. While attending preschool and elementary school there, she became fluent in the language.

Her coach at the Spokane Waves, Sean Muncie, told Swimming World, “Abi is extremely consistent and has excellent practice attendance. She’s coachable, a hard worker and a good teammate. She’s very intrinsic in her motivation.” He further says that Furqueron “is prepared. It’s a small statement, but it says a lot because it takes organization and maturity. She’s on time for practice, has her equipment ready and is focused on training. She isn’t distracted and doesn’t allow outside social in uence dictate her behavior.”

With qualities such as these, it’s not surprising that she has a 4.0 GPA as a freshman at Spokane’s Mead High School and is a talented and decorated pianist. For the last four years, she has competed and medaled at MusicFest Northwest for her pianist skills.

Outside of the pool, Furqueron enjoys skiing, cooking/baking and spending time with friends.
