Feeling Inspired

Townley Haas’ story about his rapid rise to become an American record holder and an Olympic gold medalist is inspiring. What’s more inspiring to Haas, however, is the positive outlook on life shown by his sister, Emily. In 2007, she survived being shot in the head at the Virginia Tech massacre that killed 32 people and wounded 17.

When Haas arrived on campus at the University of Texas in 2015, he was a talented swimmer, but no one knew just how much talent lay dormant within the freshman until the 2016 NCAA Division I Championships in Atlanta. It was there the young freshman unleashed the fastest relay split in the history of the men’s 800 free relay (1:30.52) and obliterated Simon Burnett’s U.S. Open and NCAA record of 1:31.20 with a 1:30.46.

Haas would go on to then become the youngest team member of the 2016 Olympic team in Rio, but despite all of his astounding accomplishments, it is his sister who continues to fuel him with inspiration.
