Swimming Technique Concepts: Risk Factors For Shoulder Injury in Swimming

Last month’s edition of Swimming Technique Concepts (August 2019) addressed the prevalence of shoulder pain in swimming.

Studies show that at any given time, there are usually 20 to 50% of swimmers suffering from shoulder pain and that 40 to 70% will suffer from shoulder pain during their careers. This article addresses the most common risk factors for shoulder problems and offers options to minimize risk.

Numerous factors can contribute to shoulder injuries, including joint instability, stretching exercises and training with hand paddles.

However, there are three generally recognized, major risk factors for shoulder injuries—overuse, muscular imbalances and harmful technique—which are explored in more detail in this month’s article.
