Swimming World Presents “Nutrition: Around the Table with Michigan Lakeshore Aquatics – Part 3”
Nutrition: Around the Table with Michigan Lakeshore Aquatics
Part 3
By Dan D’Adonna
“Around the Table” has featured Olympic gold medalists and some of the top names in swimming. This is the third of a
three-part series in which Swimming World dives into what some of the young, promising stars of tomorrow are eating.
Proper eating habits and meal planning is something extremely difficult for high school-age swimmers. Morning practice before school, then afternoon practice, schoolwork—and anything else that is a time commitment—makes it tough to be able to have a planned meal regimen.
One of the country’s most successful clubs, especially at the junior level, has been Michigan Lakeshore Aquatics. Located in Holland, Mich., on the shores of Lake Michigan, the area has become a swimming powerhouse.
Three of the top athletes in the club are Kathryn Ackerman, Elle Giesler and Kasia Norman. They go to different schools, swim different events and are headed to different colleges, but they make up three-quarters of one of the strongest medley relay combinations in the country.
In addition to coming from different schools and swimming different strokes, they have different eating habits, stressing that they eat small meals, but continue to fuel their bodies with healthy snacks throughout the day as well.
This month features the third meal from each of these up-and-comers (their first meal appeared in the April issue of Swimming World, with their second meal appearing in June).
