College Recruiting: Social Media and Early Commitments

In the third of a multi-part series, Swimming World looks at early commitments and the way social media is altering (for better or for worse) how prospects are navigating the college recruiting process.

Recruiting of high school swimmers has become a big stakes game for swimmers and parents as well as high school, club and college coaches. Thanks to a 2016 NCAA rules change, recruiting timetables have become compressed, resulting in a seismic shift in the way players are approaching the game.

Emory coach Jon Howell explained to Swimming World,

“Sophomores and juniors are committing, and kids see these posts online, and it creates an atmosphere that if you are not committed, you are behind the process.”
