Joseph Schooling wanted to be like Michael Phelps as a kid. Last summer, he beat his childhood hero in the men’s 100 butterfly on the world’s grandest stage, the Olympics. Now he wants to break Phelps’ world record. Can this swimmer from Singapore become the next greatest butterflyer of all time?

On the night of Aug. 12, 2016, Joseph Schooling’s life changed. The then-21-year-old from Singapore out-dueled the greatest swimmer of all-time and two others who ranked among the best of their generation.

“It was, basically…since I was a little kid…everything playing in my head…in fast-forward for 10 to 15 minutes,” Schooling recalled. “It was really emotional. I’ve never gotten like that before. You think about all the hard work and all the ups and downs you’ve gone through to get to this point. That was the part that really left a mark on me.”
