Abbey Weitzeil & The Cal Bears: The Other Champions
Abbey Weitzeil looked up at the scoreboard and exhaled in relief.Meanwhile, her Cal teammates were going crazy on the pool deck. The Bears had just broken the NCAA/American/U.S. Open record in the 400 free relay to close out this year’s meet.
But while Amy Bilquist, Katie McLaughlin and Izzy Ivey could hardly contain themselves by putting that exclamation point on their stellar performance at the NCAA Championships, Weitzeil just leaned back and soaked it all in.
Seeing the record time of 3:06.96, Weitzeil just floated there calmly, basking in victory.
Of course, she couldn’t get out of the pool, either.
Weitzeil injured her right arm during a relay the night before and could barely move it the next day. But when her Cal teammates needed her most, she was there—arm wrapped…and ready to make history.
“I couldn’t have done it without them. I knew I had to be last because I couldn’t get out of the pool. I knew that they had that. I knew they were going to get me a lead. They did the work,” Weitzeil said of her teammates.
