Swimming legend Ernie Maglischo has returned to the publishing scene with a new book titled “Primer for Swimming Coaches.” The book has been split into two separate volumes, featuring separate foundations for coaches to spend time on.

Volume I, titled “Physiological Foundations,” features new information about the influence of Molecular Biology on training.  Molecular biology  research is answering some of the major questions we coaches have.   Questions like, “Is it better to lift weights before or after swim training?”; “How do muscles regenerate after training?”; and,  what is the optimum combination of sets, reps, and weight used for muscle building?’.  Another topic of considerable interest in this section concerns the importance of protein balance to training effectively.

New theories on the cause of muscular fatigue are the topic for the middle portion.  Is excess lactic acid the only cause of fatigue or are other biochemical events involved?  Included is a training plan based on muscle fiber types that among other things will describe whey USRPT training works and why threshold training does not.  New methods of periodization including Block periodization and Reverse Periodization are also discussed.

Training specifics for female, age-group and masters swimmers comprise the final portion of this volume.

Volume II, titled “Biomechanical Foundations,” includes sections of Reducing Drag and Increasing Propulsion plus a chapter on each swimming stroke including the kicks used as well as starts and turns, plus common propulsive speed graphs for each stroke.  Featured are above- and under-water still motions photographs of many recent World and Olympic Champions. The final chapter concerns the use of stroke rate and stroke length for improving swimming speed and pacing races efficiently.
