BRISBANE, Australia, October 9. Swimming Australia cannot follow through on nearly $300,000 in promised performance bonuses to its over-performing squad of swimmers, according to the Courier Mail.

The article reports that Swimming Australia has called a crisis meeting with its swimmers to potentially negotiate payment plans on $288,000 in promised bonuses, including $40,000 that is owed to Cate Campbell after her amazing summer of swimming.

Some red flags have gone up about the claims of not being able to pay as Swimming Australia’s annual report from a year ago showed that it had almost $4 million in cash reserves in the bank according to the Courier Mail report.

Due to its current calls of being broke, Swimming Australia also decided to cut its Worlds team roster from 30 to 20 swimmers.

“Swimming Australia’s current financial position is strong and the high-performance budget has not changed or been reduced,” Swimming Australia CEO Mark Anderson said in a statement. “The Australian Swim Team’s international performances and rankings have taken a positive step forward over the last 12 months, with a number of athletes improving on their performance standard from previous years. This is a tremendous step forward and provides us with some great challenges that we are currently working through. No decisions have yet been made as we assess all scenarios and their impacts. As a result of these improved performance levels, the funding process will be reviewed to ensure the budget is allocated to maximum benefit across the entire athlete squad.”

According to the Courier Mail, here’s the breakdown of the full bonuses earned by Swimming Australia’s swimmers:

“Australia has six individual world No.1s who are entitled to a $15,000 bonus payment each, three world No.2s worth $10,000 each, five world No.3s valued at $5000 each and 21 performances ranked from fourth to eighth worth $3,000. Relay rankings also receive bonus payments that would total $85,000, taking the entire value of swim team bonuses to $288,000, not including what is owed to open water or Paralympic athletes.”
