Sunshine State Conference Championships, Day Three

CLEARWATER, Florida, February 17. THE Nova Southeastern men's and women's swimming and diving teams had yet another successful performance in the third day of competition at the Sunshine State Conference Championships. The Sharks have maintained their commanding position heading into the final day of competition Saturday, Feb. 18.

The men maintain their position in first place with a total of 652 points, 85 points ahead of Florida Southern who has remained in second. The women also hold their ground up top of the leader board with a total point accumulation of 653, 33 points ahead of second place Tampa.

The 400-yard IM proved to be the men's top race of the evening taking first, second and third. Oscar Aldabe (So., Alicante, Spain) touched first setting a SSC record with an A-cut qualifying time of 3:54.39. Jonas Grundstrom (Sr., Fagersta, Sweden), who also broke the SSC record, finished second with an A-cut of 3:56.63. Coming in third with a 3:59.87, B-cut time was Cameron Chambers (Jr., St. Petersburgh, Fla.) and finishing sixth, also obtaining a B-cut time, was John Michael Hayes (So., Jacksonville, Fla.) who finished at 4:04.63.

The strong suit for the women proved to be the 100-yard breaststroke, where they captured the victory and second place with two B-cut times. Ashley Bransford (So., Santa Cruz, Aruba) touched first, claiming the victory with a time of 1:04.46. Not even a second behind her was teammate Ewa Jamborska (Sr., Katowice, Poland) who finished at 1:04.54.

Also on the men's side, in the 200-yard freestyle, NSU captured one more A-cut and two B-cut qualifying times. Oskar Nordstrand (Jr., Stockholm, Sweden) captured the first A-cut time and SCC record with his second-place finish of 1:38.50. Florian Mehlan (So., Moers, Germany) claimed a B-cut time with his sixth place finish at 1:39.57 and rounding out the B-cut times was Esau Simpson (So., St. David's, Grenada) with a 13th place finishing time of 1:43.92.

In the 200-yard medley relay, Josh Davis (So., Huron, S.D.), Armin Hornikel (Sr., Goose Creek, S.C.), Santiago Pombo (Fr., Bogota, Columbia) and Simpson finished third with a B-cut time of 1:30.77.

Two more B-cut times were captured in the 100-yard butterfly by Pombo and Ash Dougan (Sr., Tewkesbury, Glouchestershire, England). Pombo finished second with a time of 49.85 and in sixth was Dougan with a time of 50.53.

Hornikel claimed another B-cut time in the 100- breaststroke with a second-place time of 54:74. Also picking up a B-cut time was fifth-place finisher Cameron Pfahler (Jr., Neptune Beach, Fla.), who touched the wall at 57:37.

Davis finished up the evening for the men in the 100-yard backstroke with a second-place B-cut time of 49:35

In addition to the women's 100- breast performance, a handful of B-cut times were obtained, one being in the 200- medley relay. Ashley Aranda (Sr., Kenner, La.), Emma Lawrenz (Fr., Minnetonka, Minn.), Jamborska and Linea Cutter(Fr., Coral Springs, Fla.) took third with an ending time of 1:46.36.

Jamborska claimed another B-cut time in the 400- IM with a third-place finishing time of 4:32.37.

In the 100- butterfly, Lawrenze and Lauren Chapple (Fr., London, England) both touched for B-cut times for fifth and seventh, respectively. Lawrenze had a time of 57.73 and Chapple, 58.06.

Erin Black (Fort Myers, Fla.) took charge for the women in the 200- free taking second place with a B-cut finishing time of 1:51.68.

Rounding out the evening for the Sharks with two more B-cut times were Aranda and Devan Martin (Jr., Duluth, Ga.) in the 100- back. Aranda touched first in third place with a time of 58.05 followed by Martin in fifth, clocking in at 58.69.

In the Friday morning time trials, the Sharks' also competed in the 200-yard freestyle. On the women's side, the top finisher was Kelsea Smith (Jr., Big Lake, Minn.), who clocked in at 1:56.74. The men took the top-two places with wins from Austin Hill (Fr., Kansas City, Mo.) and Alexander Tarr (Sr., Everett, Wash.), with times of 1:45.25 and 1:45.36, respectively.
