Sun Yang Wins 3rd Gold With 2nd-Ranked 800 Free

Sun Yang captured his third national title in as many days with a winning effort in the men’s 800-meter free at the Chinese National Championships.

Sun Yang won his third title of the week with a 7:47.58 in the men’s 800-meter free. That swim put him second in the world behind only Mack Horton’s blistering 7:47.36 from the Australian Swimming Championships.  Wang Kecheng took second tonight in 7:54.80 for 11th in the world, while Yang Jintong earned third overall in 7:57.22.

Ning Zetao smoked the men’s 100-meter free semis with a top time of 48.34. That swim pushed him to fourth in the world rankings.  Only Cameron McEvoy (48.06), James Magnussen (48.18) and Sebastiaan Verschuren (48.25) have been faster this year.

Shen Duo jumped to eighth in the world in the women’s 200-meter free with a winning time of 1:57.05.  Guo Junjun placed second in 1:57.50 with Qiu Yuhan rounding out the top three in 1:58.16.

Hao Yun captured the men’s 200-meter fly in 1:57.26, while Wang Pudong took second in 1:57.30 in a close contest.  Li Zhuhao wound up third in 1:57.73.

Shi Weijja topped the men’s 50-meter breast in 27.61 with Wang Lizhuo earning second in 27.79.  Li Xiang touched third in 27.92.

In other semifinal action, Zhou Yi posted a 2:09.15 to lead the women’s 200-meter fly qualifying.  Gong Jie qualified second in 2:10.25 with Li Shuang earning third in 2:10.27. Liu Zige wound up fifth in 2:10.70.

Fu Yuanhui improved upon her third-ranked season best of 27.76 in the women’s 50-meter back with a 27.72 in prelims.  Only Etiene Medeiros (27.38) and Emily Seebohm (27.47) have been baster.  Liu Xiang qualified second in 27.73 to move to fourth in the world rankings.
