Sun Devils Top Cowboys, Both Men and Women

TEMPE, AZ, January 8. THE Arizona State University swimming and diving teams took on Wyoming Friday afternoon at the Mona Plummer aquatic center in a dual meet that saw both squads come out on top with the women defeating the Cowgirls, 175-66 while the men overcame the Cowboys, 152-89, per Sun Devil reports.

Starting off the day for the Sun Devil women was the 400 medley relay team of Carissa Abe, Lindsey Brown, Jessica Hall and Laura Ullrich with a first-place time of 3:58.24. The 1,000 freestyle event was up next for the women who claimed a 1,2,3 sweep with Sally Brown taking the top spot with a time of 10:25.26, followed by Sandra Steffensen in 10:28.65 and Jill Kripps with a time of 10:34.74.

The Sun Devil women continued their dominance with a sweep in the 200 freestyle and the 200 IM. The 200 freestyle event saw Sarah A Fischer take top honors with a time of 1:53.50 followed by Abra Armour (1:54.50) and Kathryn Hennessy (1:56.51). Cara DeVinny took first-place in the 200 IM for the women touching the wall in 2:07.28. Coming in second and third for the Sun Devils was Amanda Gillespie (2:09.84) and Christine Creek (2:10.01). Notching a first-place time in the 50 freestyle was All-American Florencia Szigeti, touching at 23.73. Coming in next for the Sun Devils was Erin Baldinger, grabbing second-place honors with a time of 24.20.

Following a quick break in the action, the Sun Devil women continued their control as they claimed the top three spots in the next three events. The 200 butterfly saw Caitlin Andrew earn her first victory on the day with a time of 2:04.16. Sarah A Fischer edged out teammate Ullrich for second-place, swimming 2:08.25 while Ullrich finished in 2:09.90. Szigeti was true to form in the 100 freestyle event, claiming her second first-place finish on the day with a time of 51.44. Lindsey Brown (52.19) and Sandra Steffensen (23.13) finished second and third, respectively. Andrew swam to her second top finish against the Cowgirls in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:07.72. Teammates Armour and Abe took second and third place with times of 2:08.57 and 2.09.11, respectively.

The ASU women claimed the top two spots in the final three events, with Sally Brown cruising to a first-place finish in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:04.06. Gillespie came next in 5:09.20. In the 200 breaststroke, Creek grabbed top honors with a time of 2:20.46 while DeVinny finished second in 2:24.82. Rounding out the afternoon for the Sun Devils was the 400 freestyle relay team of Gillespie, Sally Brown, Steffensen and Baldinger who touched the wall in 3:30.99 followed by the ASU relay team of Armour, Kari Wilcox, Kripps and Ullrich taking second-place in 3:33.60.

In the diving pool, Cassidy Farwell took second-place honors in the 3-meter event (268.65) while Nicole Zukowski took third-place in the 1-meter event (237.53).

Lucas Azevedo got things started for the Sun Devil men in the 1000 freestyle event, taking first-place with a time of 9:25.93. The men were in the hunt in the 200 freestyle, with Jeff Barrett (1:42.21), John Zemaitis (1:43.34) and John Dwelley (1:44.15) finishing second, third and fourth respectively. Pat Fleming followed up in the 50 freestyle touching the wall first with a time of 21.30.

The ASU men showed their command in the 200 IM earning the 1,2,3 sweep behind the first-place swim of CJ Nuess. Nuess touched the wall in 1:52.65 and was followed by teammates David Kolozar (1:53.33) and Bobby Crowder (1:53.90). Kolozar and Nuess switched positions in the 200 butterfly, as Kolozar claimed top honors in 1:50.02 while Nuess swam in second-place with a time of 1:51.52.

The 100 freestyle event again saw the men in a 2,3,4 finish with Barrett finishing in second-place (46.57) while Fleming (47.19) and Richie Crowder (47.26) swam into third and fourth, respectively. The 200 backstroke saw a similar outcome with Bobby Crowder touching the wall second in 1:52.87, Evan Rahaeuser finishing third in 1:53.16 and A.J. Blusiewicz took third-place with a time of 1:54.05.

The Sun Devil men finished strong behind a top finish by Azevedo in the 500 freestyle, where he surged in the final 100 yards to over take Henry Holmberg of Wyoming to finish with a time of 4:32.61. The 200 breaststroke again had the men place 2,3,4 with Leo Martins leading the Sun Devil men in second-place in 2:03.50. Joey Clements took third in 2:04.34 while Nuess rounded out the top four with a time of 2:07.14. Finishing out the afternoon for the men were the 400 freestyle relay teams, were similar to the women, they notched the top two finishes in the final event. The relay team of Fleming, Richie Crowder, Barrett and Rahaeuser touched the wall first in a time of 3:08.57 while the team of Zemaitis, Tom Hickman, Alex Smith and Blusiewicz came in second with a time of 3:10.46.

In the diving pool for the men, Thomas McCrummen earned the sweep for the Sun Devils as he took top honors in the 1-meter (320.10) and the 3-meter (332.03). Brant Bingham grabbed second-place for the men in the 3-meter with a score of 289.88.

The ASU men's and women's swimming and diving teams return to action tomorrow afternoon at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center as the men host the University of British Columbia and the women swim against Oregon State. Events are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
