Streamlined News: Jan. 4, 2012

PHOENIX, Arizona, January 4. THE swimming community was abuzz yesterday afternoon with the news that longtime Tennessee men's coach John Trembley was being "relieved of his duties" immediately after 23 seasons in Knoxville.

The university did not give a reason for Trembley's sudden firing, but the Knoxville News Sentinel did say gross misconduct was a reason, listing a laundry list of possible actions that could fit under that category, including "theft or dishonesty, falsification of records, and reporting for duty under the influence of intoxicants." Trembley led many great swimmers to success at Tennessee, most notably Mel Stewart and Jeremy Linn, both of whom won Olympic gold medals. Trembley was also a swimmer at UT, winning a few national championships. Trembley's assistant Lars Jorgensen will take over head coach duties in the interim.

Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte, who Morning Swim Show host Peter Busch termed "Phelpte" earlier this week, are all over the television here in the United States in two commercials. Phelps' commercial with sports journalist Jay Glazer has been on the tube for a couple of months, and Lochte's Gatorade commercial debuted earlier this week during the college football bowl games. Lochte has a blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo in this 60-second spot, so in terms of TV time, Phelps is winning that race. As we get closer to the Olympics, it's likely these two swimmers, and maybe others, will show up on our TV screens with more regularity.
