Streamlined News: Europeans Continues, Skinner Possible at Alabama, Assistant Coaches Honored

PHOENIX, Arizona, May 22. FABIO Scozzoli provided the big highlight of the day at the European championships today in Debrecen, Hungary. The Italian won the 100 breast in 1:00.55, about a second slower than he swam last summer to win the silver medal at the world championships. Valeriy Dymo placed second from lane eight with a 1:00.68, which is faster than the Olympic qualifying standard. Two names that Americans might know finished seventh and eighth in the race. Former Cal Bear Damir Dugonjic was seventh with a 1:01.51 after posting an Olympic qualifying time of 1:00.64 in yesterday's semis, and Louisville senior Carlos Almeida finished eighth with a 1:01.57.

Paul Biedermann and Britta Steffen coasted through their semifinal races today. Biedermann posted a 1:47.9 in the 200 free, looking smooth and controlled in the first 100 meters. Steffen was equally controlled in her 100 free race, qualifying second in 54.71 behind teammate Daniela Schreiber.

Jonty Skinner confirmed to Swimming World on Monday that he will most likely join Dennis Pursley at the University of Alabama in the fall. Like Pursley, Skinner is a former Alabama swimmer who won the 100 free for the Crimson Tide at the 1975 NCAA Championships. Skinner would not commit to the move, but he seemed excited to get back into coaching and reunite with Pursley. Skinner has coached at Alabama before, including holding the head coaching job in 1990, before he served as the coach of the Resident Team for USA Swimming in Colorado Springs from 1994 until 2000. Most recently, Skinner spent eight years as the Director of National Team Technical Support, visiting Great Britain often to work with elite athletes.

CollegeSwimming.com has named its assistant coaches of the year, Matt Ense and Stef Kerska. Ense was recognized as Rising Assistant Coach of the Year for his work with the two-time Division III National Champion Denison team, while Kerska won in the Lifetime/Career Category after spending nearly two decades coaching under recently-retired Michigan women's coach Jim Richardson.
