PHOENIX, Arizona, October 25. THE United States is obliterating the competition in water polo at the Pan American Games.

On the women’s side, the Americans have outscored their opponents 44-4 in two games. The American men have done just as well, beating their opponents 24-8. If both teams hold up through the championship round, the Americans will earn a spot in the Olympics.

A swimmer and a coach made headlines yesterday in the United States and Canada when both were removed from the pool deck. Pierce Hunter, a swimmer on the Diablo Valley College team, was added to USA Swimming’s banned list after pleading no contest to a sexually-related attack on a college girl in her dorm room in June. Hunter must register as a sex offender and will serve five months in county jail. Up north in Ontario, Canada, Cecil Russell is finally off the pool deck after it was discovered he had been coaching despite a lifetime ban given to him in 2007. Russell was banned once in 1997 for a litany of charges that included involvement in an international steroid ring and disposing of a body. After being reinstated, he was banned again in 2007 when officials discovered he had lied during the reinstatement process. For allowing Russell to coach on the team, Dolphins Swim Club has received a suspension that runs from January to May 31, 2012, and is on probation through August 31 next year. During that time, Dolphins Swim Club cannot compete in any sanctioned meets in Canada. Several swimmers on the team are trying to qualify for the Olympics, including Russell’s children Sinead and Colin.
