PHOENIX, Arizona, October 20. THE United States continues to increase the gold medal tally at the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Last night, three of the five events went to the Americans, but the highlight of the day had to be Thiago Pereira’s win in the 200 IM. The Brazilian went 1:58.07, which is about a second faster than he swam at the world championships to get sixth place. If you factor in that the meet is being held at altitude, Pereira’s time makes him a serious threat for that wide-open bronze medal in the 200 IM at the Olympics.

Amanda Kendall continued her very impressive run at the Pan American Games, winning the 100 freestyle in 54.75, a personal best time by three tenths that doesn’t move her up the rankings among American women, but makes her a contender for a relay spot on the Olympic team. Kendall now sits in seventh in the US rankings. Erika Erndl, the 33-year-old who is also looking to make a spot on the Olympic roster, finished second with a 55.04, which is also a best time for her.

Conor Dwyer had a great day in the pool in Mexico, earning silver in the 200 IM in a personal best of 1:58.64 and leading off the winning 800 free relay with a 1:47.62. He’s now ninth in the world in the 200 IM and 24th in the 200 free. But most importantly, his time now ranks him fifth among Americans, behind Ryan Lochte, Michael Phelps, Peter Vanderkaay and Matt McLean.

Today’s prelims saw Cesar Cielo set himself up for what could be a very fast 50 free final. The world champ won his heat in 22.17 and is likely looking to improve on his 21.52 from worlds. Also one to look out for in the final is Brazilian Bruno Fratus, who swam in the final of the 50 free at worlds and went under 22 seconds there.

Ye Shiwen almost broke 2:10 in the 200 IM at the China National City Games, going a 2:10.01. Ye is the reigning world champion in the 200 IM, when she went a 2:08.90.
