PHOENIX, Arizona, October 10. CHAD Le Clos was the top swimmer of the first stop of the FINA swimming world cup in Dubai, winning $9,000 in two days of swimming.

Le Clos won all six of the events he swam, using a powerful final 25 meters to overtake some top swimmers, including world record holder Evgeny Korotyshkin in the 100 fly. The talent field wasn’t as big in Dubai as it will be in the remainder of the world cup meets, so Le Clos will find tougher competition in the next six meets.
Also swimming well in Dubai was Germany’s Marco Koch, who walked away with $5,000 after winning all three breaststroke events. Petra Granlund of Sweden won the most money on the women’s side: $5,500 after placing in the top three in five events, including two golds.

The next stop on the FINA world cup circuit begins Saturday in Stockholm. A lot of the top swimmers from European countries are scheduled to be at the meet, including hometown star Therese Alshammar. Several Australians are making the trip to Sweden as well, including Libby Trickett. Trickett will be competing internationally for the first time in about two years, looking to regain her form in time for the Australian Olympic Trials.

Back here in the United States many of the top universities began their seasons with dual meets and invitationals. The University of Florida routed the field at the second annual All-Florida Invite. Elizabeth Beisel was just one of many swimmers to win multiple events, taking four individual titles: the 500 free, 200 IM, 100 back, and 1650 free. Teresa Crippen stepped up for seven individual events and won three of them: the 400 IM, 200 back and 200 fly. On the men’s side, Florida freshman Matt Elliott proved to be an immediate asset to the Gators, winning the 400 IM, 100 breast and 200 breast. Florida State finished second in the meet on the strength of a deep team and three wins over the weekend.

The California Golden Bears women’s swim team began their run to a possible second-straight national title on Friday with a win over Oregon State. The Bears won 168-85, with junior Caitlin Leverenz the top performer, winning the 200 fly and 400 IM on Friday, and in an exhibition meet on Saturday, winning the 100 breast and placing second in the 500 free immediately after.
