Splashbacks 2022 (Nov.-Dec.): The Training Of Nic Fink; Aussie Family Traditions Thrive

A new year is around the corner and if 2023 is anything like the past 12 months, there will be plenty to discuss and follow. Over the last year, the sport witnessed its share of standout performances, some controversy, the emergence of new stars and a jam-packed competition calendar.

Keeping with tradition, Swimming World will wrap up the 2022 campaign with its annual series titled, Splashbacks. Through six installments that are broken into two-month periods, we will revisit some of the biggest (and most-read) stories from the past year.

Here are the top stories from November and December.

1. Sara Mardini, Sister of Olympic Swimmer, Facing Charges In Greece

This article, actually from 2021, focused on Sara Mardini, the Syrian refugee who fled to Greece with her sister and Olympic swimmer Yusra Mardini. Sara Mardini was among 24 humanitarian aid works in Greece who faced criminal charges for assisting people on the island of Lesbos. The story of the sister became well-known when it was turned into a Netflix movie, “The Swimmers,” and this attention brought the piece back into the spotlight.

2. Australian World Champion Freestylers Emma McKeon and Lani Pallister Born Into Dolphins Golden Gene Pools

In this feature by Ian Hanson, the rich lineage of Emma McKeon and Lani Pallister is examined. McKeon and Pallister hail from families with wonderful traditions in the pool, and their success on the global scene is a continuation of what was achieved before them.

3. How They Train Nic Fink: The Work Of the American Breaststroke Star

In this training-set article, the program followed by Nic Fink was highlighted. Fink has emerged as one of the world’s elite breaststrokers, excelling in both the long-course pool and short-course pool. Fink recently medaled in all three individual breaststroke events at the World Short Course Championships in Melbourne.

4. FINA World Masters Championships Qualifying Standards Released

Masters swimmers around the world got the chance to set goals when FINA announced the qualifying times for next year’s World Masters Championships. The meet will take place across three different sites in Japan from Aug. 2-11.

5. Four Olympians Among Deep Group Of 18-and-Under Swimmers Racing at U.S. Junior Nationals

When the psych sheets were revealed for the United States Junior Nationals, several impressive names were featured. The list included a quartet of athletes with Olympic experience: Bella Sims, Katie Grimes, Lydia Jacoby and Summer McIntosh. Jacoby was the Olympic champion in the 100-meter breaststroke at the Tokyo Games.
