South Dakota State, Western Illinois vs. Iowa State

AMES, Iowa, October 30. THE Iowa State swimming and diving team swept all the events of its double-dual meet with South Dakota State and Western Illinois Saturday at Beyer Pool. The Cyclones defeated SDSU 152-83 while knocking off WIU 161-48. The wins improve Iowa State's dual meet record to 4-1 on the year.

"I was real pleased with how we competed today," Iowa State head coach Duane Sorenson said. "We asked our women to stand up and compete today and they did a great job at that. They attacked all their races and finishing at the end."

The Cyclones were led on the day by Dani Harris. Harris started the day by leading off for the winning 400 medley relay team. Harris got on the board again with a victory in the 200 IM, clocking in at 2:09.90. The sophomore collected her third win of the day in the 100 back, running away from the field in 58.13.

"Fantastic 200 IM, really swam a nice fly leg to win the race," Sorenson noted. "She went out and swam a solid 100 back again. She is starting to come back into shape after knee surgery in the spring."

Jenny Vondenkamp swam an entertaining 1000 free, winning a showdown against South Dakota State's Andee Budahl in 10:27.56. Vondenkamp followed that up with a victory in the 500 free for the second day in a row, touching the wall first in 5:10.12.

"Jenny really swam an outstanding 1000," Sorenson said. "Jenny showed her opponent from South Dakota State how to swim the race and finish somebody off."

Iowa State led off the meet with a victory in the 400 medley relay in 3:59.59 through the team of Harris, Emily Wiltsie, Elena Carvell and Kalyn Amundsen. The rest of relay swimmers were not done as they all notched individual victories on the day. Carvell got her second victory of the day in the 100 fly, posting a winning time of 58.16. Amundsen found her second victory of the day in the 100 free, posting a winning time of 54.08. Wiltise struck the wall first in the 100 breast with a time of 1:08.46.

Alex Gustafson continued her strong start to her Cyclone career, victorious in the 200 free with a time of 1:57.09.

Sarah Norris picked up a win in the 50 free, touching the wall first in 24.84.

The Cyclones closed out the meet with a victory in the 400 free relay. The team of Carvell, Katie Vollhaber, Brianna Carlberg and Gustafson went the distance in 3:39.20.

In the diving well, Sarah Nelson took the 1-meter title, posting a score of 254.65. The competition within the team continued to be intense as the next three Cyclone divers, Lauren Naeve, Abby Christensen and Jessica Nicholson, finished within 10 points of each other.

"Overall I thought we did well," diving coach Jeff Warrick said. "We were not at the high level that we wanted to be at. We were not as sharp starting off but I don't see anything major that we have to fix. We are going to keep improving and getting better."

Nelson completed the sweep of the boards on 3-meter, posting a career-best score of 276.05 on the board.

"That was by far her best consistency-wise," Warrick noted. "I see that in practice from her a lot, it was just putting it together in a meet. Her hard work is paying off and I expect to see more from her in that regard."

Iowa State returns to Beyer Hall Wednesday, Nov. 10 for a dual meet against the Northern Iowa Panthers. The meet is slated to begin at 6 p.m.
