South African Long Course Nationals: Vanessa Mohr, Wendy Trott Turn in Qualifying Times

PORT ELIZABETH, South Africa, April 14. THE ladies stole the show on the fourth day of the Telkom SA National Senior and Youth Championships in Port Elizabeth when Pretoria-based Vanessa Mohr sped to a FINA World Championships qualifying time in the 100m butterfly followed by Wendy Trott's phenomenal performance in the 800m freestyle, swimming over five seconds faster than the set qualification time.

Mohr's early lead continued throughout the race and she touched the wall with a time of 58.93, followed by Mandy Loots in 1:00.15 and Marne Erasmus in 1:02.00.

Trott added to her A qualification of the 1500m freestyle achieved on the second night of the competition, when she finished in 8:30.66 ahead of Roxanne Tammange (8:44.89) and Jessica Pengelly (8:46.16) in the 800 freestyle.

Karin Prinsloo swam to her first FINA World Championships qualification time in the 50m backstroke semi-finals tonight with a time of 29.03 ahead of Chanelle van Wyk's 29.29. Tomorrow evening's final will confirm Prinsloo's qualification as she will need to swim under the allocated time of 29.07. She will also be in the 50m freestyle final tomorrow after finishing in top position in tonight's semi-finals.

Riaan Schoeman added his name to the Shanghai list in the thrilling final of the 400m individual medley. Schoeman's slow start strategy paid off when he sprinted in the final 200 meters to finish over two seconds ahead of the pack in 4:16.29. Chad le Clos took a silver in 4:18.67 and Michael Meyer a bronze in 4:27.89.

Heerden Herman and Mark Randall booked their places to the FINA World Championships when they finished first and second in the 800m freestyle in 7:58.07 and 7:59.94 respectively, both over ten seconds ahead of the set qualification time of 8:10.26.

Cameron van der Burgh is one step closer to making his second qualification race for Shanghai when he sprinted to a 27.59 in the 50m breaststroke semi-final tonight, just under the 27.63 criteria time. Van der Burgh will be up against Neil Versfeld in tomorrow night's final who finished second in the semi-finals with a time of 27.95.

In the 100m backstroke, Charl Crous improved on his heats time of 55.29 to finish with an A qualification time of 54.95 in the semi-finals tonight. The final for the event will take place on Friday.

In the 100m freestyle, Roland Schoeman scooped the gold in 49.40 with Gideon Louw (49.48) in second and Leith Shankland (49.65) in third.

The Youth finals lived up to the expectations as Zimbabwe's James Lawson once again grabbed a gold medal, this time in the 50m breaststroke with a time of 30.38, following close behind him was Christopher Brill in 30.43 and Christopher Ryan in 30.44.

Erin Graham came first in the 50m backstroke in 31.15, Brittany Reeves was second in 31.38 and Rita Naude in third in 31.46. In the 100m breaststroke, Nikki Kirkby swam a golden 1:14.56 ahead of Jessica Liss (1:14.69) and Michelle Wessels (1:14.85).

In the 50m freestyle, 16 year old Kayla Ferreira finished with the gold in 27.39 while Zaahir Gamiet was first in the 100m backstroke in 58.37 and Reynard Wessels took the title in the 100m butterfly in 55.57. The 400m individual medley winner, Kurt Benjamin collected a gold in 4:39.68.

The Telkom SA National Synchro Championships saw the duet finals today with Western Province's Xandie Goosen and Samantha Sadler walking away with the gold in the 13-15 age group category, Eastern Province's Mieke Struwig and Jessica Mandell in second and Western Province's Jody Laguma and Lauren Paulse in third.

The 16-18 age group duet gold went to Sally Torr and Nicola David from the Western Province and Courtney Musson and Bronwyn Kemp from the Eastern Province took the silver. Western Province once again took the gold with the silver going to KZN in the Senior section.

The Telkom SA National Senior and Youth Swimming Championships continues tomorrow at the Newton Park Swimming Pool in Port Elizabeth with the heats starting at 09h00 and the finals beginning at 18h00.
